Phu Quoc itinerary: Hon Thom cable car above fishing boats in An Thoi harbour

Phu Quoc Itinerary: 3, 4, 5 and 7 Days Planned by Zone (2026)

The easiest way to spoil a short Phu Quoc trip is to plan it by attraction popularity. The island’s most famous sights are spread across a 50 km north–south strip: Vinpearl Safari, VinWonders and Grand World at the top, the Hon Thom cable car and Sunset Town at the bottom, with Duong Dong and the airport in between. Line them up in the wrong order and you can spend two or three hours a day in a car, often paying for the same long taxi ride twice.

This Phu Quoc itinerary guide solves that by giving every day one zone. You get ready-made plans for 3, 4, 5 and 7 days, the base that suits each one, realistic timings for the big attractions, and the transport options that make each plan work — from Grab and taxis to tours, drivers, scooters and rental cars.

Three Rules That Make Every Phu Quoc Itinerary Work

One zone per day. Group the north (Safari, VinWonders, Grand World), the south (Hon Thom, Sunset Town, islands) and the south-east (Sao Beach, Ho Quoc Pagoda, Phu Quoc Prison) into separate days. Duong Dong and the west coast fit around arrival, departure and lighter days.

Put the boat day early. Island-hopping and the cable car depend on the sea and the weather. If you plan them for day two or three rather than your last day, you still have room to move them when a tour is cancelled or the sea looks rough.

Pick one big evening show per evening. This is the detail most plans miss. The Quintessence of Vietnam at Grand World starts around 8:15 pm in the far north, while Kiss of the Sea in Sunset Town starts around 9 pm in the far south, roughly an hour’s drive away. You cannot see both on the same night, so tie each show to the day you are already in that zone. Show times change occasionally, so check the current schedule before you go.

Where to Base Yourself for Each Plan

For 3 to 5 days, one base in Duong Dong or along Long Beach keeps both the north and the south within about 30–45 minutes, and gives you the most restaurants and transport choices in the evenings. Our guide to Duong Dong explains what staying in town is like.

If your trip is mainly about the cable car, islands, sunsets and evening shows, a Sunset Town base also works well for 4–5 days; see our Sunset Town hotel review. Expect one longer return trip for the north day.

For 7 days, split your stay. Three nights in the north or centre and four in the south means you never cross the whole island more than once, and you can walk to dinner after a long day instead of sitting in a taxi.

Whichever plan you pick, check the exact hotel location on the map before you book: on an island this long, two hotels that both say “near the beach” can be 40 minutes apart.

3 Days in Phu Quoc: The Essentials

This plan assumes three full days and a central base. It covers the two zones first-time visitors usually care about most and leaves the theme park and the east coast for another trip.

Day 1: The south — Hon Thom cable car and Sunset Town

Start mid-morning at An Thoi station for the Hon Thom cable car, which crosses nearly 8 km of sea and fishing boats to Hon Thom island. At the time of writing, the cable car runs from about 9:30 am, with the last return trip around 5:30 pm, and an adult round-trip ticket costs around 850,000 VND. Spend a few hours on the island’s beach or at the Aquatopia water park, then ride back in the afternoon. Our Hon Thom Cable Car tips cover timing and which ticket to choose.

In the late afternoon, walk around Sunset Town: the Mediterranean-style streets, Kiss Bridge at sunset and the evening bazaar. End with Kiss of the Sea at around 9 pm; read our Kiss of the Sea review to decide on seats. For more ideas in the area, see Sunset Town beyond Kiss Bridge.

Day 2: The north — Safari and Grand World

Be at Vinpearl Safari when it opens at 9 am. The animals are more active in the morning and the heat is easier to manage; allow about half a day. Our Vinpearl Safari guide explains the safari bus and walking zones.

After lunch, rest at your hotel or a café, then head to Grand World in the late afternoon. Entry is free; the canals and lanterns look best from dusk. Stay for The Quintessence of Vietnam, the large evening show at around 8:15 pm, which our show guide reviews in detail, and see our Grand World guide for what else to do there.

Day 3: Duong Dong and the west coast

Keep the last day light. Visit Su Muon Pagoda, about 5 km from central Duong Dong on the road towards Ham Ninh, and stop at a pepper farm on the way back; neither needs more than an hour. Spend the afternoon on the beach, then watch the sunset at Dinh Cau and walk to the night market. Our evening in Duong Dong route links them, and our Phu Quoc night market guide explains what to eat and how to order seafood.

4 Days in Phu Quoc: Add the Sea or the South-East

The 4-day plan keeps the three days above and adds one day. Choose based on what you want more of.

Option A: Island-hopping day

Most island-hopping tours pick you up from your hotel at around 8 am and return at around 4 pm. A typical route visits three or four small islands off An Thoi, such as Gam Ghi, May Rut and Mong Tay, with snorkelling stops and lunch on board or on a beach. Some tours include the Hon Thom cable car, others offer it as an upgrade, and island stops change with the weather. Our Phu Quoc island hopping guide compares the tour types in detail.

If you choose a tour that includes the cable car, you can drop the cable car from Day 1 and spend that morning on the beach or at The Peak instead. Because inclusions differ so much, compare a few tours side by side before booking: you can check Phu Quoc island tours on Trip.com and Phu Quoc experiences on GetYourGuide.

Option B: The south-east loop

If you prefer a quieter day on land, combine the south-east sights into one loop. Start at Ho Quoc Pagoda on the coast, spend late morning and lunch at Sao Beach, then visit Phu Quoc Prison near An Thoi in the afternoon. The prison is a serious, sobering stop, so it works better at the end of the day than before a beach.

This loop is easiest with a private driver or your own transport, because taxis are less frequent on this side of the island.

5 Days in Phu Quoc: The Best First-Time Plan

Five days lets you see the main sights without rushing, and it is the plan we would choose for most first visits.

DayZonePlan
1CentreArrive, beach afternoon, Dinh Cau sunset and the night market
2NorthVinpearl Safari in the morning, Grand World and The Quintessence of Vietnam in the evening
3South (sea)Island-hopping tour, ideally with the cable car included; evening in Sunset Town and Kiss of the Sea
4South-eastHo Quoc Pagoda, Sao Beach, Phu Quoc Prison
5Centre / westSu Muon Pagoda or a pepper farm, slow beach time, sunset at a west-coast beach club

On the last evening, a west-coast sunset is the natural ending. Sunset Sanato, with its long-legged elephant sculptures on the beach, and the other places in our best sunset spots in Phu Quoc are all good choices.

If the weather turns on Day 3, swap it with Day 4 or Day 5. This is why the boat day sits in the middle of the trip rather than at the end.

7 Days in Phu Quoc: Two Bases, No Rushing

A week is long enough to add VinWonders, a full beach day and a few unplanned hours. The key change is moving hotel once, from the north or centre to the south, so you never repeat the long cross-island drive.

DayBasePlan
1North / centreArrive and settle in, sunset on the west coast
2North / centreVinpearl Safari in the morning, Grand World and the evening show
3North / centreVinWonders for the day, or north-coast beaches if theme parks are not your thing
4Move southSu Muon Pagoda or a pepper farm on the way, check in, evening in Sunset Town and Kiss of the Sea
5SouthIsland-hopping tour
6SouthHon Thom cable car (if not included in the tour), then a beach afternoon at Khem Beach
7SouthSouth-east loop (Ho Quoc Pagoda, Sao Beach, Phu Quoc Prison) or a slow morning before your flight

VinWonders is a full-day theme park with rides, a water park and a large aquarium. At the time of writing, it is open from 9 am to 7:30 pm, with an adult ticket of around 1,050,000 VND, and it ends with an evening show. Read our VinWonders tips before going. For the south half of the week, our Khem Beach guide helps you plan a calm beach day.

The airport is in the south-west of the island, so ending the week in the south also keeps your departure transfer short.

Getting Around on These Itineraries

Every plan above works without your own vehicle, but the right choice depends on the day.

OptionBest forWhat to know
Grab or metered taxiTown evenings, Sunset Town, short hops, most travellersEasy in the west and south; fewer cars waiting in quiet areas at night. Cross-island rides add up (Duong Dong to An Thoi is roughly 300,000–450,000 VND by taxi).
Organised tour with pickupIsland-hopping, and Safari or VinWonders if you prefer not to arrange transportPickup and return are handled for you; check what is included before booking.
Private car with driverNorth day, south-east loop, familiesRoughly 1,000,000–1,800,000 VND for a full day; agree hours and stops in advance.
ScooterExperienced, licensed ridersFlexible and cheap, but heat, rain and traffic make long days tiring.
Rental carConfident drivers who want full freedomUseful for the south-east loop and quieter beaches; you need a licence that is valid in Vietnam.

The free shuttle that links VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari and Grand World is useful on the north day once you are there. The VinBus also connects the airport, Duong Dong and Grand World.

If you plan to use Grab, set up mobile data before you land, so you can book your first ride straight from the airport. You can compare Vietnam plans from Yesim or Trip.com eSIM. If your flight lands late or you are heading to a resort far from town, a pre-booked airport transfer on Trip.com saves you sorting out transport on arrival.

Not planning to ride? Our Phu Quoc Without a Scooter guide shows a real six-day trip done entirely by taxi, shuttle and on foot. If you would rather drive, Phu Quoc by Car covers routes around the island, and you can compare self-drive options on Localrent.

If you do ride a scooter or plan a lot of boat time, check that your travel insurance covers it; EKTA is one option to compare.

Adjusting the Plan

In the rainy season (roughly May to October), keep the boat day flexible and have an indoor back-up, such as the aquarium at VinWonders or the Teddy Bear Museum at Grand World. The east and south-east coasts are often calmer than the west at this time of year. Our Phu Quoc in June guide shows what wet-season days actually look like, and our guide to the best time to visit Phu Quoc compares every month.

With children, give the north two days (Safari one day, VinWonders the next) and skip the prison. Mornings are better for anything outdoors. Our Phu Quoc with kids guide has a full family plan.

For a slower trip or a long stay, use the 7-day structure and add beach days in between. Our story of staying at Phu Quoc Marina for three months gives a sense of the island at a slower pace.

What to Skip on a Short Trip

On a 3- or 4-day trip, VinWonders is the easiest thing to drop unless theme parks are the main reason you are coming: it needs a full day and repeats the north zone you already visit for Safari and Grand World. Equally, there is no need to see both evening shows; choose the one that fits your base. And rather than trying to visit every beach, pick one or two from our 10 best beaches in Phu Quoc that sit on your route.

Booking Checklist Before You Go

  • Island-hopping tour: book a few days ahead in high season and check whether the cable car and hotel pickup are included.
  • Safari, VinWonders and show tickets: buying online in advance can save queueing at the gate.
  • Airport transfer: worth arranging for late arrivals, families and remote resorts.
  • eSIM: set up before departure if you plan to use Grab and maps.
  • Hotels: choose the base that matches your plan first, then compare hotels inside that area.

Final Verdict: Which Plan Should You Choose?

If you only have 3 days, choose the essentials plan, stay central and accept that the east coast and VinWonders will wait for another trip.

If you have 4 days, add the island-hopping day if you love the sea, or the south-east loop if you prefer temples, history and a quiet beach.

If you have 5 days, the five-day plan is the best balance of sights, sea and rest for most first-time visitors.

If you have a week, split your stay between north and south. Moving hotel once costs you an hour; not moving can cost you an hour every day.
