After spending months exploring some of the best beaches in Phu Quoc, I stopped asking which one was simply “the best.”
The better question is: best for what, and in which season?
I have seen Khem Beach rougher in March and almost glassy in June. I have watched the sun disappear into the sea from different parts of Long Beach, reached Starfish Beach expecting the famous red stars and found the quiet sunset almost more memorable, and seen two sections of Bai Sao look like completely different beaches on the same day.
So this is not a ranking from prettiest to ugliest.
It is a guide to choosing the right Phu Quoc beach for the trip you are actually planning.

1. Long Beach (Bai Truong): Best for Sunset, Restaurants and Convenience
Long Beach is the easiest answer if you want your beach, hotel, restaurants and evening plans to live in roughly the same part of the island.
This is Phu Quoc’s developed west-coast strip.
The sand is more golden than white, and I would not choose it if my only goal were the most photogenic tropical water on the island.
That is not really the point.
The point is that you can spend the afternoon by the sea, move to a beach club for sunset, eat nearby and continue into the evening without turning every outing into an island-crossing expedition.
I spent enough time around the Long Beach and Marina side to see several versions of it: resort stretches, beach clubs, sunset spots and much simpler sections of coast.
What it consistently does well is convenience.
Best for: sunsets, beach clubs, restaurants, first-time visitors, staying without a scooter
Skip it if: your priority is powder-white sand or near-total silence
Stay here if you do not want to rent a scooter
If I were planning Phu Quoc around easy evenings, restaurants and sunset rather than long daily rides, this is one of the first areas I would consider as a base.

2. Ong Lang: Best for Quiet Without Giving Up Comfort
Ong Lang is the beach area I would look at when Long Beach feels too busy but complete isolation sounds inconvenient.
The coastline is not one perfectly continuous sheet of sand. Small sandy bays are interrupted by rocky sections, which gives the area more character but also means the exact location of your hotel matters.
That is important.
“Staying in Ong Lang” does not automatically mean stepping out of your room onto the same kind of beach shown in somebody else’s hotel photos.
I like it as a base because it sits in the middle ground: calmer than the central west coast, but still developed enough that you are not planning every coffee and dinner as a logistics problem.
Best for: couples, slower stays, quiet evenings, people who still want cafés and restaurants nearby
Watch for: rocky sections and differences between individual hotel beaches
If you are choosing accommodation here, I would check the exact beachfront location rather than booking by area name alone.
3. Bai Sao (Sao Beach): Best for the Classic White-Sand Photo
Bai Sao is the beach people tend to picture when they imagine Phu Quoc.
White sand. Turquoise water. Tropical holiday photos.
But this is also where choosing the exact section matters enormously.
On one visit, I stopped at a public-access stretch first.
It looked awful that day.
The water was murky, plastic and debris had washed ashore, and the whole section felt neglected. If I had turned around there, Bai Sao would have stayed in my memory as one of the island’s biggest disappointments.
I kept driving.
Near Paradiso, the beach looked almost completely different.
The sand was white, the shallows turquoise and the managed section much cleaner. On that visit, I paid around 100,000 VND for a sunbed, which also gave me access to a shower.
Treat that as my historical price, not a current tariff.
The important lesson is:
Do not judge Bai Sao by the first access point you reach.
I would also go earlier rather than building the entire day around arriving at the busiest time.
Best for: white sand, tropical photos, shallow water
Watch for: crowd levels and large differences between beach sections
4. Starfish Beach: Best for the Experience, Not a Guaranteed Carpet of Starfish
Starfish Beach near Rach Vem is one of those Phu Quoc places whose reputation can become bigger than the actual visit.
Do not go expecting somebody to switch on hundreds of bright red starfish for your arrival.
That is wildlife, not a theme park.
What I remember most from my own trip is the journey north, the long quiet stretch of coast and arriving as sunset was beginning.
We had actually gone a little past the point we wanted and ended up walking farther along an almost empty beach.
There were some starfish in the shallow water, but the atmosphere became as much a part of the experience as the animals themselves.
And there is one rule I would keep very simple:
Do not pick up the starfish for photos.
Leave them where they are and photograph them in the water.
The north-island drive is part of this outing, so I would not squeeze it between three other attractions and expect the same experience.
Best for: north-island road trips, a slower beach stop, something different from a resort beach
Skip it if: you only want guaranteed swimming conditions and the shortest possible transfer
5. Ganh Dau: Best for a Scenic Northern Detour
Ganh Dau sits far up on Phu Quoc’s northern side and feels very different from the resort-heavy parts of the island.
On a clear day, the Cambodian coastline can be visible across the water.
I would treat Ganh Dau more as a north-island scenic stop than as the beach I would choose for an entire classic beach day.
Come for the road, the coastal atmosphere and the feeling that you have reached one of the island’s edges.
Best for: scenic drives, northern Phu Quoc, quieter coastal atmosphere
Not my first choice for: lying on the same beach from breakfast until sunset
6. Ham Ninh: Come for the Fishing-Village Coast, Not the Swimming
Ham Ninh belongs in a beach guide because it shows another version of Phu Quoc’s coastline.
But I would not send somebody here saying, “This is where you should spend your best swimming day.”
The attraction is the fishing-village setting, shallow coastal water and the relationship between the village and the sea.
This side of the island can also look dramatically different with the tide.
If what you want is white sand and a lounger, go somewhere else.
If you want to see a coastal community rather than another resort beach, Ham Ninh makes much more sense.
Best for: fishing-village atmosphere, seafood, seeing another side of the island
Skip it for: a dedicated swimming day
7. Khem Beach: Best for White Sand and a More Polished South-Island Stay
Khem is one of the beaches I am most careful about describing because I have personally seen it look very different at different times.
In March, during what is supposed to be the easier beach season, I saw rougher water and debris pushed toward the shore.
When I came back in June, the sea was almost glassy.
Emerald water, very little movement, boats appearing to float above the surface.
That experience cured me of the idea that any Phu Quoc beach can be reduced to one permanent description.
Khem itself is beautiful: pale sand, a curved bay and a much more resort-oriented setting than Bai Sao.
If you want the white-sand south but prefer staying somewhere polished rather than making a day trip to a busy public beach, Khem makes sense.
Best for: white sand, couples, resort stays, combining the beach with southern Phu Quoc
Watch for: actual sea conditions on the day you visit

Make the white-sand south your base
If Khem is the beach you are choosing Phu Quoc for, there is a good argument for staying nearby rather than repeatedly travelling south.
STAY NEAR KHEM BEACH
Wake up in the white-sand south instead of turning it into a daily commute.
8. Bai Dai: Best for Resorts Plus VinWonders and Grand World
Bai Dai is the north-island option I would consider if your trip is not only about beaches.
This is the more developed resort side of northern Phu Quoc, with easy access to the large entertainment cluster around VinWonders, Safari and Grand World.
That makes it a very different proposition from Vung Bau.
Choose Bai Dai because you want resort + beach + attractions in the same part of the island.
Do not choose it because somebody told you northern Phu Quoc is automatically wild and empty.
It is much more developed than that description suggests.
Best for: families using the northern parks, resort stays, combining beach and attractions
Skip it if: your idea of north Phu Quoc is complete isolation
9. Vung Bau: Best for a Quieter Northwest Beach
Vung Bau is the northwest choice for people who looked at Bai Dai and thought: less infrastructure, please.
This is a quieter crescent-shaped beach area with fewer reasons to come other than the beach itself.
And that is exactly the appeal.
I would put Vung Bau on the list for somebody who has their own transport and wants a slower day without the entertainment-complex feel of the developed north.
Best for: quiet, space, relaxed beach time, independent travelers
Watch for: fewer services than the island’s main tourist strips
10. Bai Vong: A Port Coast, Not a Beach Day
Bai Vong is useful to understand because many travellers see this part of Phu Quoc when arriving by sea.
But I would not place it beside Bai Sao and Khem and pretend they are competing for the same job.
They are not.
This is a port and fishing coast.
The shallow shoreline can change dramatically with the tide, and ferries connect this side of the island with the mainland.
It can be interesting as a local coastal stop.
It is not where I would spend my only beach day on Phu Quoc.
Best for: seeing the eastern port coast, local context
Skip it for: classic swimming and beach-resort time
What About Dat Do and An Thoi?
Dat Do is worth remembering if you have your own scooter or car and want to explore less-developed stretches around the south.
I would treat it as a bonus discovery rather than one of the beaches around which I would build a first Phu Quoc itinerary.
An Thoi, meanwhile, is not really another beach choice.
It is the gateway to the southern islands.
If your actual goal is coral, snorkeling and a boat day, I would stop comparing mainland beaches and start looking at an An Thoi island-hopping trip instead.
The Season Can Change Which Beach Wins
This is the part I wish more Phu Quoc beach guides explained properly.
There is no single beach that wins twelve months of the year.
During the drier season, the west coast is generally the easier side for long beach days.
During wetter months, the west can become rougher, while beaches on the southeast side may sometimes surprise you with much calmer conditions.
I saw that contrast myself at Khem.
But I would never turn that into:
“It is June, therefore Bai Sao and Khem will definitely be perfect.”
Weather does not follow blog posts.
Check the actual sea.
Look at the forecast.
Ask locally.
Then choose the coast.
That is far more useful than following a list written for one month of the year.
Which Area Should You Stay In for the Beach?
This is where the beach decision becomes a hotel decision.
Stay around Long Beach if:
you want restaurants, sunset, beach clubs and easier evenings without depending heavily on your own transport.
Stay around Ong Lang if:
you want a quieter base but still want comfortable access to cafés and restaurants.
Stay around Khem Beach if:
the white-sand south is part of the reason you are coming and you prefer a resort-style holiday.
Stay around Bai Dai if:
VinWonders, Safari or Grand World are major parts of your itinerary.
Stay on the quieter east or northwest coast if:
you actively want distance from the main tourist centres and are comfortable planning your transport around that choice.
There is no universally best area.
The better question is what you want to be within ten minutes of every morning.
My Phu Quoc Beach Shortlist
If you forced me to reduce the island to five starting points, I would choose them by purpose:
- For the classic white-sand beach: Bai Sao
- For white sand + a resort stay: Khem
- For sunset + nightlife: Long Beach
- For a quieter base: Ong Lang
- For a different kind of day out: Starfish Beach
That is also why I would not try to visit every beach just because it appears on a map.
A holiday is too short to spend half of it collecting coastlines you do not actually want.
Pick the experience first.
Then pick the beach.
