Khem Beach Phu Quoc and JW Marriott: Beach, Design Hotel and Southern Island Guide
Khem Beach Phu Quoc, also known as Bãi Khem, is a beach area in southern Phu Quoc, near An Thoi. It has light sand, a curved bay, cafes, small beach clubs, sun loungers and hotels close to the sea.
The strongest visual landmark in this area is JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay. This is not just another beach resort. It is a design-led hotel with a fictional university story, colorful buildings, vintage details, concept restaurants and the whole world of Lamarck University behind it.
That is why I would look at Khem Beach in two ways: as a beach stop in southern Phu Quoc, and as a hotel area with one of the most memorable resorts on the island. You can come here for a few hours to swim, take photos and have lunch, or you can use it as a base if you want to stay closer to southern Phu Quoc, Sunset Town and Hon Thom Cable Car.

What is Khem Beach Phu Quoc?
Khem Beach is located in the southern part of Phu Quoc, near An Thoi. It is not an empty wild beach with no facilities. It is a more organized beach area with restaurants, cafes, beach clubs, sun loungers, resort zones and hotels nearby.
On a good day, the beach can look very beautiful: light sand, calm water, an easy sea entrance and a pleasant bay. You can swim, rent a lounger, have a drink by the water, eat lunch and take photos.
But Khem Beach is not always the same. Its appearance can depend on the season, wind, waves and the exact part of the beach you visit.
How Khem Beach can look in different months
My impressions of Khem Beach were very different in different months.
In March, the sea was rougher. There were waves, and in some places the water had brought trash onto the shore. In that condition, the beach did not look like a perfect postcard.
In June, it was completely different: the water was calm, the bay looked cleaner, the sea entrance felt pleasant and the beach was comfortable for relaxing.
So I would describe Khem Beach honestly: it can be very beautiful and calm, but the experience depends on weather, waves, wind and season. It is better not to expect the same ideal picture every day of the year.
What you can find on Khem Beach
Different parts of Khem Beach can feel different, but in general you may find:
- cafes and small restaurants
- beach clubs
- sun loungers for rent
- beach areas connected to restaurants or resorts
- hotels and resort zones nearby
- photo spots
- quieter sections for relaxing by the water
Conditions depend on the exact beach area. In some places, sun loungers are paid separately. In others, they may be connected to a food or drink order. Some sections may belong to hotels or specific venues.
If you want to spend real time by the sea, it is better not to go to “Khem Beach in general.” Choose the part that matches your plan: cafe, loungers, shade, shower, parking or easy access to the water.
JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay: the hotel-university by Khem Beach
JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay is the main design story of the Khem Beach area. Marriott describes the resort as a place with “unique experiences in a mythical university,” designed by Bill Bensley and set against the background of a fictional 19th-century French university.

The concept is built around Lamarck University. Bensley describes the project as a “dream university” dedicated to the study of all things natural, from anthropology to zoology. The name refers to Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, a French naturalist connected with early evolutionary thought.
Because of this concept, the resort does not feel like a standard beach hotel. It is designed like a fantasy campus by the sea: academic departments, vintage objects, books, globes, laboratory references, collections, colorful buildings and the feeling of an old university moved to a tropical island.
The strength of JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay is the complete story. The hotel is not just a group of pretty buildings near the beach. It works like a theatrical world with its own invented past.
Even the restaurants and bars support the idea. Marriott lists venues such as Tempus Fugit, Pink Pearl, Red Rum, French & Co. and Department of Chemistry Bar as part of the resort’s dining scene.

This is why JW Marriott matters for Khem Beach. The beach is not only sand and sea here. The area has a stronger visual identity because of the resort: a calm bay, light sand and a hotel that looks like a destination in itself.
Where to stay near Khem Beach
The Khem Beach area is worth considering if you want to stay closer to southern Phu Quoc, the beach, Sunset Town, Hon Thom Cable Car and evening shows.
JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay is the standout option if you want a hotel experience built around design, restaurants, beachfront setting, service and the Lamarck University concept.
But it is not the only option in the area. Around Khem Beach, An Thoi and southern Phu Quoc, you can also find other hotels, smaller guesthouses, apartments and simpler places to stay. This can work well if you want to stay near the southern attractions but choose accommodation based on your own budget and travel style.
Food and cafes near Khem Beach
Khem Beach has cafes, small restaurants and beach venues. Depending on the exact area, this may be a simple seaside cafe, a beach club, a hotel restaurant or a place near the beach.
This is a good area to look for seafood, fish, drinks and a light beach lunch. One famous Phu Quoc dish is gỏi cá trích, a fresh herring salad usually served with herbs, coconut, peanuts and rice paper.
I would not visit Khem Beach only for this dish, but local food and seafood fit naturally into a beach day here.

How to get there and what is nearby
Khem Beach is in southern Phu Quoc, near An Thoi. From the central parts of the island, the drive takes time, so it makes more sense to plan it as part of a southern Phu Quoc day rather than a quick 20-minute stop.
Nearby and easy to combine:
- JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay
- other hotels and stays around Khem Beach / An Thoi
- Sunset Town
- Hon Thom Cable Car
- Kiss Bridge
- Kiss of the Sea
- Symphony of the Sea
- cafes, restaurants and evening spots in southern Phu Quoc
A simple plan could be: spend the day at Khem Beach, then go to Sunset Town later for a walk, dinner, Kiss Bridge or an evening show.
Sun World says visitors can also use the free Sun World Hon Thom shuttle bus to travel to Sunset Town, but schedules, stops and conditions should be checked before visiting because transport details can change.
Sunset Town near Khem Beach
Sunset Town is not part of the beach experience itself, but it is useful if you are staying or spending the day around Khem Beach.
In Sunset Town, you can add:
- Kiss Bridge – a modern photo spot by the sea
- Kiss of the Sea – a large multimedia show
- Symphony of the Sea – an evening sea show
- Sun Bavaria GastroPub – dinner, drinks and a convenient evening stop
- cafes, restaurants and evening photos
This matters when choosing where to stay. Southern Phu Quoc can be a convenient base if you want beach time during the day and evening activities nearby.
Is Khem Beach worth visiting?
Yes, if you want a more organized beach area in southern Phu Quoc with cafes, loungers, hotels nearby and a calm bay on good days.
Khem Beach is especially interesting because of JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay. The resort adds a strong visual character to the area, so Khem Beach becomes not only a beach stop, but also a place with design, hotel storytelling and a recognizable identity.

The area is also worth considering for accommodation if you want to stay in the south of the island, close to Khem Beach, Sunset Town, Hon Thom Cable Car and evening shows.
If you want a completely wild beach with no venues, loungers, cafes or hotels, Khem Beach may feel too organized. But for sea, comfort, photos, food, design and a resort-style atmosphere, it is one of the more interesting areas in southern Phu Quoc.
