Khem Beach Phu Quoc & JW Marriott: Free Beach Access, Day Pass and Where to Stay
Khem Beach Phu Quoc is free to visit — you do not need a hotel booking. The public part of this pale-sand bay in southern Phu Quoc is free to enter. JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, the remarkable Bill Bensley resort on the same coastline, is a separate experience: you can stay overnight or arrange a limited visitor day pass. The distinction matters, because arriving at a resort gate is not the same as finding the public beach entrance.
I have seen Khem Beach on two very different days. In March, waves had washed debris onto parts of the sand; when I returned in June, the water was calmer and the bay looked much cleaner. I would happily come back on a good sea day, but I would choose how to visit based on what I wanted: a swim, a look at the resort’s interiors, or a proper hotel stay.

How to reach Khem Beach without paying for a hotel
The local tourism portal lists Khem Beach as free, and independent beach-access guides describe the Melodia approach for non-guests. You may still pay for parking, a lounger, an umbrella, showers or food. You do not need a resort day pass simply to stand on the public sand or swim in the sea.
The part of the beach you reach matters. Resort-managed sunbeds and amenities are not automatically public facilities, even if the sand continues along the same bay. I would check which café or lounger operator is providing a service before sitting down.
What Khem Beach actually looks like: my March and June visits
Khem Beach is a curved bay on the southeast coast of Phu Quoc, near An Thoi. On a calm day the light sand and shallow-looking turquoise water make it easy to understand why visitors come here. Cafés, loungers and resort properties give parts of the shore a more organised feel than a completely undeveloped beach.
My two visits were a useful reminder not to judge a beach entirely by the photographs. In March I encountered more surf and some washed-up rubbish. In June the water was much calmer, the beach looked cleaner and I enjoyed the sea entrance. Those were conditions on my visit dates, not a rule that March is bad or June is always good. Wind, currents and recent weather can change both the water and the shoreline.
I would allow a few hours if you want a swim and lunch, rather than rushing through only for a photograph. It is also worth remembering that Khem faces the east side of the island: if you are planning a west-facing sunset experience, Sunset Town is a more natural choice for the evening.
JW Marriott Phu Quoc: a fantasy university beside the sea
The standout building on Khem Beach is JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa. Designer Bill Bensley built the resort around the imaginary history of Lamarck University, a fictional academic institution, rather than reconstructing a real historic campus.
That premise gives the property its character. Books, vintage-looking collections, colourful façades and rooms imagined as academic departments make the complex feel like a place with a story. The design carries into the restaurants: Department of Chemistry Bar resembles a fanciful laboratory; French & Co. has a patisserie atmosphere; and Pink Pearl occupies an elaborate pink mansion within the resort’s invented world. You can look at the building from outside, but access to the interiors is governed by the hotel.
This is the part of Khem Beach that genuinely appeals to me as a design story. The appeal is in the details and the playful, consistent setting. I would not describe the whole resort as a public sightseeing attraction, though: being interested in its architecture does not give a beach visitor unrestricted access.
Can you visit JW Marriott Phu Quoc without staying there?
Yes, through the hotel’s published non-resident visitor voucher, subject to availability. As checked on 1 November 2026, Marriott lists a VND 1,000,000 day pass per person. The full amount is redeemable as food-and-drink credit at selected resort outlets. The pass allows access to designated areas until 6:00 PM on the same day.
If you were already planning a substantial lunch or drinks in the resort, the dining credit makes the pass more interesting. If your only goal is a free swim, there is no reason to buy it: use the public beach access instead. And if you mainly want pool time, this voucher is the wrong product.
Where to stay around Khem Beach
For a special resort stay, JW Marriott is the obvious design-led option. It works best for someone who wants to spend time on the property itself: restaurants, room interiors, pools, landscaping and an unusually theatrical setting. Check the actual room or suite category and package inclusions before choosing it.
Another beachfront option is Premier Residences Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, an apartment-style resort on Khem Beach. It is a different proposition from the Marriott: more about contemporary resort accommodation and shared facilities than the imaginary-university experience. There are also smaller hotels and guesthouses in the wider An Thoi area, though staying inland will usually involve transport to the sand.
If you want to compare stays rather than book a single resort blindly, use the accommodation map below. Look at the walking route to the beach, the specific property, whether the beach facilities belong to the hotel and what is included in the rate. Do not assume every listing labelled ‘Khem Beach’ is beachfront.

Food, transport and an easy southern Phu Quoc day
You can find beach cafés, restaurants and loungers around the public section of Khem Beach. Before ordering, check whether a lounger is charged separately or tied to a minimum spend. Traditional island dishes include gỏi cá trích, herring salad with herbs and rice paper, but there is no need to plan a special food stop if you came only for the beach.
For most visitors staying in Duong Dong, Long Beach or elsewhere on the island, a taxi, Grab car or arranged transfer is more straightforward than trying to walk in from An Thoi. Drivers should be given the Melodia public-beach landmark unless you are actually checking into a resort. If you are heading to the Marriott, use the hotel address instead.
A comfortable plan is a swim and lunch at Khem Beach, followed by an afternoon or evening in Sunset Town. That is where you can take a closer look at Kiss Bridge, and, on another day, ride the Hon Thom cable car. A major island-hopping tour is usually a full day in its own right; I would not squeeze it into the same beach afternoon.
