The Peak Phu Quoc sunset view over Duong Dong and the sea

Where to Stay in Phu Quoc: Best Areas for Every Type of Trip (2026)

Where you stay in Phu Quoc matters more than which hotel you pick. The island is about 50 km from north to south, its biggest attractions sit at opposite ends, and the main resort strip alone runs for roughly 20 km. Choose a hotel in the wrong area and a good-value room can turn into 40-minute taxi rides for every dinner, show and beach day.

This guide on where to stay in Phu Quoc compares the island’s main areas by what actually shapes your trip: the beach outside your door, what you can walk to in the evening, how long it takes to reach Grand World or Sunset Town, and who each area suits. Choose the area first, and the hotel decision becomes much easier.

Phu Quoc’s Layout in One Minute

Most hotels sit along the west coast, which faces the sunset. From north to south, the main areas are the north (Ganh Dau, Bai Dai, Vung Bau), Ong Lang, Duong Dong town, Long Beach (Bai Truong) stretching south past the airport to Phu Quoc Marina and Sonasea, and finally An Thoi and Sunset Town at the southern tip. Khem Beach and Sao Beach are on the south-east coast, and the quiet east coast around Ham Ninh has few places to stay.

Here is the detail most hotel listings blur: “Long Beach” is not one place. A hotel at its northern end is a short walk or ride from Duong Dong’s night market. A hotel at its southern end, around Phu Quoc Marina, is closer to the airport and Sunset Town, and about 25 minutes by car from Duong Dong. Both can honestly advertise “Long Beach”, so always check the pin on the map.

Duong Dong and Northern Long Beach

Best for: first-time visitors, budget and mid-range travellers, anyone without a scooter, people who want restaurants and markets on foot.

Duong Dong is the island’s main town, and its biggest advantage is choice. Restaurants, cafés, pharmacies, supermarkets, the night market and the sunset at Dinh Cau are all close together, and taxis are easy to find. Because it sits in the middle of the west coast, both the north and the south are reachable as day trips.

The trade-offs are noise, traffic and a beach that is fine rather than memorable. The sweet spot for many visitors is the northern end of Long Beach, along Tran Hung Dao street, where you get beachfront hotels and still have town within a short ride. Hotels here range from simple guesthouses to established resorts such as La Veranda.

Avoid if: you want a quiet resort holiday or the best possible beach outside your room.

Our guide to Duong Dong looks at what staying in town is really like, and the evening in Duong Dong route shows how much you can do on foot after dark. For the other night markets around the island, see our Phu Quoc night market guide.

Southern Long Beach: Phu Quoc Marina and Sonasea

Best for: couples, families who want calm and walkability, long stays, travellers who want to be close to the airport and the south.

At the southern end of Long Beach, the Phu Quoc Marina and Sonasea area is a newer, more planned part of the island, with beachfront hotels, apartments, a promenade, cafés, spas and the Sonasea night market. Large international resorts such as InterContinental sit along this stretch. The airport is about 15 minutes away, and Sunset Town is closer than it is from Duong Dong. Sunset Sanato, one of the island’s best-known sunset beach clubs, is also on this part of the coast.

The trade-offs: fewer local restaurants than in town, slightly higher prices, and a quiet atmosphere that some people love and others find too calm. The VinBus links the area with Duong Dong and Grand World. For a long-stay perspective, read our story of coming to Phu Quoc Marina for four days and staying three months.

Avoid if: you want local street life and nightlife on your doorstep.

Ong Lang

Best for: couples and slow travellers who want greenery, small calm beaches and boutique resorts.

North of Duong Dong, Ong Lang feels noticeably more relaxed: smaller coves, trees down to the sand, and low-rise resorts such as Mango Bay. It is a good choice if you want a quiet base but do not want to be as far out as the far north. Grand World is fairly close, and Duong Dong is a short taxi ride for dinner.

The trade-off is dependence on transport. Restaurants are spread out, so you will take a taxi or ride a scooter for most meals outside your resort, and Sunset Town is a long trip.

Avoid if: you do not want to use taxis every evening, or most of your plans are in the south.

The North: Bai Dai, Ganh Dau and Vung Bau

Best for: families, theme-park trips and travellers who want a large resort with everything on site.

The north is home to Vinpearl Safari, VinWonders and Grand World, along with big resort complexes on long, quiet beaches at Bai Dai and Ganh Dau. A free shuttle links the main attractions, so families can spend several days here with very little transport planning. Vung Bau and Cua Can, a little further south, are quieter still.

Grand World Phu Quoc evening view

The trade-off is distance from everything else. Sunset Town and Hon Thom are more than an hour away, and outside the resorts and Grand World there is little to walk to.

Avoid if: you want to spend several evenings in the south, or you prefer a town atmosphere. For families with a week or more, a split stay — a few nights north, then a few nights south — usually works better than staying north the whole time. Our Phu Quoc with kids guide compares family bases in more detail.

Sunset Town and An Thoi

Best for: couples, travellers without a scooter, evening-lovers and anyone focused on the Hon Thom cable car and island-hopping.

Sunset Town is a purpose-built, Mediterranean-style district on the southern tip, with hillside hotels, cafés, the Kiss Bridge, an evening bazaar and the nightly Kiss of the Sea show. It is one of the easiest areas on the island to enjoy on foot. The Hon Thom cable car station and the boats for island-hopping are close by, and Khem Beach is a short ride away.

Sunset Town Phu Quoc walking area near Hillside Sky

The trade-offs: the north is about an hour away, and on the hillside, two hotels that look close on the map can involve very different walks. Our Sunset Town hotel review of Hillside Sky and our month-long experience in Living in Sunset Town show what staying here is like day to day. At the very southern tip, Premier Village sits on its own headland if you want a secluded luxury option nearby.

Avoid if: the theme parks in the north are the main reason for your trip.

Khem Beach and Sao Beach (South-East)

Best for: luxury stays, honeymoons and travellers who want the island’s finest sand and calm water.

Khem Beach is a sheltered bay with soft white sand and a handful of large resorts, including JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay and New World; our Khem Beach and JW Marriott guide covers the beach and the hotel in detail. Sao Beach, a little further up the coast, is popular for day visits and has more modest places to stay. During the rainy season, this side of the island is often calmer than the west.

Khem Beach near Sunset Town Phu Quoc

The trade-off is isolation. You will rely on your resort for most meals, and everything beyond Sunset Town needs a taxi.

Avoid if: you want to eat out in different places every night without arranging transport.

The East Coast

Around Ham Ninh and the quieter beaches of the east coast there are only a few small places to stay. It is a good area to visit for seafood, a beach bar such as Rory’s Beach Bar or a scenic drive, but for most first-time visitors it is better as a day trip than as a base.

How to Choose a Hotel Once You Know the Area

When you have chosen your area, a few checks make the difference between a convenient stay and a frustrating one:

  • Beachfront or across the road? On Long Beach in particular, “beach access” can mean crossing a busy street.
  • Walking distance to food. Check what is within 10 minutes on foot, especially if you will not ride a scooter.
  • Hillside position in Sunset Town. Look at the exact location; some hotels are close to the waterfront, others involve steep walks.
  • Shuttles. Many resorts in the north and some on Long Beach run shuttles to town or attractions; confirm whether they are free and how often they run.
  • Distance from the airport. It matters most for late arrivals and early departures.

Once you have narrowed down your area, compare current hotels inside it rather than across the whole island; that is where the real differences in location show up.

Getting From the Airport to Your Area

Phu Quoc International Airport is in the south-west of the island, so Long Beach, Phu Quoc Marina and Sunset Town are relatively close, while the north takes around 45 minutes. Grab and metered taxis are available at the airport; a taxi to Duong Dong typically costs around 120,000–180,000 VND, and longer trips to the north cost more. Our Phu Quoc airport to hotel guide compares taxis, Grab, the bus and transfers for each area.

If you land late, travel with children or are staying at a resort in the north or on the south-east coast, a pre-booked transfer removes the need to sort out transport on arrival. You can compare Phu Quoc airport transfers on Trip.com, including vehicle size and meeting details.

If you plan to rely on Grab from your hotel, set up mobile data before you fly. You can compare Vietnam plans from Yesim or Trip.com eSIM.

Staying somewhere quieter, such as Ong Lang, the north or the east coast, and want more freedom? Read Phu Quoc by Car and compare self-drive options on Localrent. If you will not drive or ride, our Phu Quoc Without a Scooter guide explains which areas work best on foot and by taxi.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Where to Stay

  • Booking by price alone. A cheap room in a remote area can cost more in taxis than you saved.
  • Trusting “Long Beach” in the listing. The beach is long; check whether the hotel is near town or near the Marina.
  • Staying north for a south-focused trip (or the reverse). Match your base to the attractions you care about most.
  • Ignoring the season. In the rainy season, the west coast can be rough, while Khem and the south-east are usually calmer; our guide to the best time to visit Phu Quoc explains the seasons by coast.
  • Not checking the walk to dinner. Especially in Sunset Town on the hillside and in resort areas without nearby restaurants.

Final Verdict: Where Should You Stay?

If this is your first trip and you want to see a bit of everything, stay in Duong Dong or the northern end of Long Beach.

If you want a calm, walkable base close to the airport and the south, choose Phu Quoc Marina and Sonasea.

If you are a couple who cares about evenings and sunsets, choose Sunset Town; if you care more about the beach and privacy, choose Khem Beach or Ong Lang.

If you are travelling with children for the theme parks, stay in the north, and add a few nights in the south if your trip is longer than five days.

Once you have chosen your base, our Phu Quoc itinerary shows how to plan 3, 4, 5 or 7 days from it without crossing the island more often than you need to.
