Creative Workshops in Da Nang: Painting, Candles & Pottery

I celebrated my birthday in Da Nang by making a scented candle, drinking chilled sparkling wine and spending two hours in an art studio instead of going to another restaurant.

I enjoyed it so much that I went back for an acrylic painting workshop.

Neither activity required any special skills. And in my case, that was important, because I enjoy painting but can’t really draw.

After four months on Phu Quoc, where my days had settled into a rhythm of tropical heat, beaches and endless sunsets, Da Nang felt like a welcome change. I loved the slower island lifestyle, but I was ready to do something more active.

Not necessarily another sightseeing excursion. I wanted to learn something, work with my hands and spend a few hours doing something completely different.

That’s how I discovered Create Danang Art Space.

I also found two other studios worth investigating: Tadaa Workshop & Studio and Lep Pottery.

If you’re looking for things to do in Da Nang beyond the beach, creative workshops are a great option for a rainy afternoon, a birthday, a date or simply a break from sightseeing.

Here’s what I personally tried, what the workshops cost and what you should know before booking.

Creative Workshops in Da Nang: Where to Start

Lep PotteryPottery and ceramic workshopsNot yet visited

Create is the studio I can recommend based on firsthand experience.

The other two interested me while I was exploring creative activities around Da Nang, but I haven’t attended their workshops.

For travellers with limited time, I’d choose the activity first.

Do you want to make a scented candle, paint a canvas, decorate something or work with clay?

That decision matters more than finding the studio with the prettiest Instagram photographs.

Create Danang Art Space: My Birthday Candle-Making Workshop

Location: 18A My Da Dong 8, My An, Da Nang

Best for: Candle-making, painting, beginner-friendly art activities, birthdays and creative afternoons with friends

Official website: https://createdanang.com/

Create Danang is both an art studio and a café.

That combination is part of what makes it appealing.

You can come for a workshop, order something to drink and enjoy a couple of hours making something without feeling as though you’re attending a formal art course.

I discovered Create when I was looking for a different way to celebrate my birthday.

I didn’t want the day to revolve entirely around another restaurant visit. I wanted something memorable that involved actually doing something.

Candle-making seemed like a good choice.

Creative Workshops in Da Nang: Painting, Candles & Pottery

Three People, Two Hours and Plenty of Wax

I went with a friend.

There was one other woman in our group, so only three of us attended the session.

It was small enough to follow the instructor easily and ask questions whenever we needed help.

The instructor explained everything in English.

We chose fragrances, prepared the wicks and worked with the wax to make our own scented candles.

There were several little decisions to make along the way, which was part of the fun.

What scent did we want?

How should the candle look?

Were we doing everything correctly?

The instructor guided us through the process, so none of it felt difficult.

I hadn’t made a candle before, but that wasn’t a problem.

The Best Detail: Chilled Brut During the Workshop

Create also has a café and drinks service.

We ordered chilled brut sparkling wine, which arrived in an ice bucket.

And I have to say, choosing a fragrance for your candle while sipping cold sparkling wine is a rather enjoyable way to spend a birthday.

We talked, laughed and worked on our candles.

It felt more like a small celebration than a lesson.

There was no pressure to produce anything impressive or learn a complicated technique.

The workshop lasted approximately two hours.

For me, that was perfect.

Long enough to enjoy the whole process, but not so long that I became tired or lost interest.

By the end, we’d made our candles and had a lovely afternoon together.

I should mention that the sparkling wine was part of my experience, not something I’d assume is included in every workshop. Check the current drinks menu if that’s important to your plans.

Would I Recommend Create for a Birthday?

Yes.

Particularly if you want to do something with a friend or partner that doesn’t involve simply sitting at a restaurant table.

You have something to talk about, something to make and something to remember afterwards.

And there’s no need to be artistic.

Candle-making is accessible even if you’ve never tried anything similar.

My Second Visit: Acrylic Painting When You Can’t Draw

I enjoyed Create enough to return for another activity.

This time, I chose acrylic painting.

The atmosphere was quite different.

During candle-making, we’d been chatting throughout the workshop. Painting required more concentration.

I found myself paying attention to the colours, the brush and what was happening on the canvas.

There was just one problem.

I like colouring things in. Actually drawing them from scratch isn’t my strength.

Starting with a completely blank canvas felt a little intimidating.

Fortunately, the instructor helped.

They kindly sketched an outline for me, and I took over from there.

That suited me perfectly.

I could concentrate on applying the paint, combining colours and enjoying the creative process instead of struggling with drawing the original picture.

I know my painting skills aren’t particularly impressive.

But I discovered that doesn’t matter very much when the purpose of the workshop is to enjoy yourself.

Candle-Making or Acrylic Painting?

Having tried both, I’d choose them for different reasons.

Candle-makingAcrylic painting
Better for a social afternoonBetter for quiet concentration
Choose fragrances and work with waxWork with colours, brushes and canvas
Easy to chat during the processMore absorbing and meditative
A useful handmade objectA personal piece of artwork
My choice for a birthdayMy choice for unwinding

If I were going with friends for a special occasion, I’d probably choose candle-making again.

If I wanted two hours away from messages, screens and everyday distractions, I’d choose painting.

And if you’re nervous about drawing, ask the instructor whether they can help with an outline.

That made the experience much more enjoyable for me.

Prices are from the studio’s published October 2026 catalogue and may change.

The studio advertises daily workshop sessions between 10 AM and 6 PM.

Materials and guided instruction are included in the listed workshop programme.

Classes are available in English and Vietnamese, and the activities are designed to accommodate beginners.

Which Workshop Would I Choose Next?

Textured art interests me because it offers something different from conventional painting.

Instead of working only with colour, you create raised surfaces and patterns using texture paste.

A mosaic coaster also sounds appealing, particularly as a small handmade souvenir.

And if you’re visiting Vietnam for the first time, decorating a traditional conical hat, or nón lá, could be a fun alternative to buying a mass-produced souvenir.

One important detail: the scheduled workshops aren’t necessarily the same as special themed events.

Create also organises seasonal sessions and social activities, so check the current programme rather than relying on an old event announcement.

How to Book a Workshop at Create

Create accepts advance bookings through its website.

You can select the activity and available time slot before visiting.

The studio also offers private and group bookings, which may be useful for birthdays or other celebrations.

This is the studio’s direct booking page, not an affiliate link.

Two More Creative Studios on My Da Nang List

I haven’t visited these studios yet, so I can’t review their instructors, atmosphere or the quality of their workshops firsthand.

But both caught my attention for different reasons.

Tadaa Workshop & Studio: Baking, Candles and Decorative Crafts

Tadaa appealed to me because of its range of creative activities.

From the programmes and announcements I found, the studio offers workshops involving scented candles, painting, baking and other decorative projects.

Some sessions focus on seasonal themes, while others involve making something you can take home.

It looks like an option for people who prefer a small creative project rather than a traditional art lesson.

I’d be particularly interested in trying one of the baking or decorating workshops.

What to check before booking:

  • The current workshop calendar.
  • Whether the activity is suitable for beginners.
  • Instruction language.
  • Duration and included materials.
  • When the finished item can be collected.

Because the programme changes, I wouldn’t plan a visit around an activity advertised several months ago.

Lep Pottery: Working With Clay in Sơn Trà

Lep Pottery is another studio I saved for a future visit.

I found it while looking for smaller creative spaces in the Sơn Trà area, around Trần Quang Khải.

What interested me was its focus on ceramics.

I like the idea of sitting down with clay and concentrating on making something, rather than spending another afternoon visiting tourist attractions.

I haven’t attended a class there, and I couldn’t confirm a current workshop timetable or price list.

So I’d contact the studio before visiting rather than assuming regular sessions are available every day.

One Thing to Check Before Booking Pottery

Pottery can be more complicated for travellers than painting or candle-making.

If you create an object from wet clay, it may need time to dry before firing.

Glazing and a second firing can extend the process further.

That means you might not be able to take your finished piece away immediately.

Before booking, ask:

  • Will I make something from clay or decorate a prepared ceramic object?
  • Does the piece need firing?
  • How long before I can collect it?
  • Is shipping possible if I’m leaving Da Nang?

If you’re only in the city for a weekend, these answers may determine whether pottery is the right activity.

Which Workshop Should You Choose?

My recommendation depends on what you actually want to do.

Your priorityWhere I’d look
A birthday or creative dateCreate Danang candle-making
Painting without previous experienceCreate Danang acrylic painting
A small decorative projectCreate mosaics or textured art
Baking or seasonal craftsTadaa’s current workshop programme
Working with clayLep Pottery, subject to availability
A handmade Vietnamese souvenirCreate conical hat painting
An indoor activity on a rainy dayAny available indoor session

I would personally return to Create because I’ve already enjoyed two different workshops there.

For Tadaa and Lep Pottery, the choice would depend on the specific activity available on the day.

Coffee and Brunch Near Create Danang

Create is in My An, an area where it’s easy to combine a creative workshop with a café visit or brunch.

You don’t need to organise a separate sightseeing excursion around it.

SIX ON SIX CAFE

Google Maps

SIX ON SIX became one of my favourite brunch spots in Da Nang.

I particularly liked the eggs Benedict, and I still remember the pink salt on the tables.

It’s the kind of place where I’d happily spend time over a leisurely breakfast before heading to a workshop.

Roost Coffee Roasters

Google Maps

Roost is worth considering if you’re interested in specialty coffee.

I’d choose it for a coffee stop rather than a full brunch.

Sa-Ke Coffee & Food

Google Maps

I also saved Sa-Ke for its cosy, quieter atmosphere and café food.

Check the current listing before visiting, as I haven’t independently confirmed its latest operating details.

You can easily make a workshop the centre of a relaxed half-day in My An, with coffee or brunch before or afterwards.

What to Know Before Booking a Workshop in Da Nang

Can You Attend a Workshop Alone?

Yes, solo travellers can look for individual workshop places.

Create advertises private and group options as well as regular sessions, but the availability of an individual slot depends on the date and activity.

You don’t need to arrive with a group of friends.

A workshop can be a pleasant way to spend time around other people without organising a social event.

Are Workshops Suitable for Beginners?

Create’s current programme is beginner-friendly.

My own experience supports that.

I had no candle-making experience, and the painting instructor helped when I needed an outline.

For other studios, check the skill level before booking.

Can You Bring Children?

Create offers children’s creative activities and accepts family bookings.

However, not every workshop will necessarily suit every age.

Candle-making, for example, involves hot materials and requires appropriate supervision.

Check age requirements directly with the studio.

How Long Should You Allow?

Many Create workshops last two hours.

I’d allow a little additional time for arriving, ordering drinks and collecting your creation.

If you’re planning brunch as well, this can easily become a pleasant half-day activity.

Can You Take Your Creation Home Immediately?

Don’t assume so.

Paintings may need time to dry.

Candles may need to cool and set.

Ceramics can require considerably longer because of firing and glazing.

Check collection arrangements before paying, particularly if you’re leaving Da Nang the same day.

Are Workshops Good for Rainy Days?

Yes.

Indoor art activities are a useful alternative when the weather isn’t suitable for the beach.

But I’d still book in advance and confirm the session is operating.

Heavy rain can affect transport around the city, even when the workshop itself is indoors.

Why I Like Creative Activities When Travelling

I enjoy visiting temples, historical sites, viewpoints and interesting neighbourhoods.

But after travelling for months, I sometimes want an experience that doesn’t involve going somewhere just to look at it.

There’s something satisfying about making things yourself.

During the candle workshop, I was choosing fragrances, working with wax and chatting with my friend.

During the painting session, I was concentrating on colours and trying to get the result I wanted on the canvas.

For a couple of hours, I wasn’t thinking about work, messages or where I needed to go next.

And it didn’t matter that I wasn’t particularly good at drawing.

I was enjoying the process.

Final Thoughts: A Different Kind of Da Nang Souvenir

Da Nang has more to offer than beaches, bridges and mountain excursions.

If you’re staying for a few days, a creative workshop can be a different way to spend an afternoon.

If you’re staying for weeks, it’s also a good way to add some variety to your routine.

For me, Create Danang turned out to be one of those unexpected discoveries that made everyday life in the city more interesting.

I went there to celebrate my birthday and make a candle.

I returned to paint.

And I’d happily try another workshop when I’m back in Da Nang.

Not because I’m planning to become an artist.

I simply enjoy making something with my hands.

Sometimes the best souvenir from a trip isn’t something you buy in a shop.

It’s the memory of making something yourself, enjoying the process and being surprisingly pleased with the result.
