Cappadocia without a car is entirely possible, but it works best when you stop expecting one transport system to do every job. You do not need to book a tour for every attraction. I travelled around Cappadocia independently in June 2026, including a public-transport day visiting both Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities. The buses worked—but the trip required more attention to connections than a guided tour would have.

The crucial distinction is that Cappadocia has a functional local transit network, not a tourist hop-on/hop-off shuttle. Getting from Göreme to Avanos is straightforward. Trying to connect Paşabağ, Zelve, Devrent and several viewpoints in one day is a different problem.

The Key to Getting Around: Use Different Transport for Different Jobs

Cappadocia is not difficult without a car because there is no transport. It becomes difficult when you expect a local minibus to behave like a sightseeing shuttle.

The most efficient approach is:

Walk for central Göreme, nearby attractions and suitable hiking routes.

Use dolmuş for regular journeys between towns.

Connect through Nevşehir when travelling toward the underground cities.

Use Uber Taxi for short trips where the bus route is inconvenient.

Use a tour or private driver when several distant attractions need to be connected in one day.

Independent travel does not mean choosing the slowest possible option simply to avoid a tour. It means choosing the transport that makes sense for the journey.

Where to Stay in Cappadocia Without a Car

Choosing the right base is the biggest factor in making Cappadocia without a car straightforward.

Göreme — Best Overall Base

For a first trip without a rental car, Göreme is the easiest all-round choice.

You have restaurants, tour services, local transport, accommodation and several major sights within a relatively compact area. Many hotels also offer or arrange airport and activity transfers.

The biggest advantage is that you can spend some days almost entirely on foot.

Uçhisar — Good for Views, Less Convenient as a Hub

Uçhisar works well if you want a quieter stay and wide valley panoramas.

It has regular transport connections, but the village is hillier and less convenient for repeatedly moving between different parts of Cappadocia. If you plan to visit Göreme most evenings, factor that into your accommodation choice.

Avanos — Good for a Slower Stay

Avanos is easy to explore on foot and has useful dolmuş connections to Göreme and Çavuşin.

The limitation is not the town itself. It is the time spent waiting for transport when you want to leave Avanos for several other attractions.

Çavuşin — Particularly Useful for Hiking

Çavuşin is a good base if Rose Valley and the surrounding trails are a priority.

It is quieter than Göreme and sits on the Göreme–Avanos dolmuş route. For a first trip with lots of different sightseeing days, however, Göreme remains the more flexible base.

What Can You Walk to From Göreme?

A surprising amount.

Göreme Open-Air Museum

The Göreme Open-Air Museum is roughly a 20-minute walk from central Göreme, depending on where your hotel is located.

You do not need to arrange transport simply to reach it from town. The approach is uphill in places, so allow a little more time in hot weather or if you prefer a slower pace.

Nearby Valley Trails

Several of Cappadocia’s central hiking routes can be approached from Göreme or nearby villages.

The important point is to distinguish the valley floor from the panoramic viewpoint.

For example, Love Valley’s famous viewpoint is not the same access point as the main valley-floor hike. Red Valley’s sunset viewpoint is also a different planning proposition from hiking through the connected trail network.

A car gets you to the trailhead, but it does not help once the hike begins.

On a point-to-point route, it can actually create an extra problem: getting back to where you parked.

What to Do Before Your First Journey

Bring some Turkish lira in cash.
Photograph the timetable at your departure stop—do not wait until you are at the destination to wonder when the last bus leaves.
Ask where the return service departs.
Arrive early for an hourly service.

Do not rely on Google Maps as your only source of local bus information. Municipal timetables and information displayed at the stop are more useful for these routes.

Göreme to Avanos and Çavuşin by Dolmuş

This is one of the simplest independent journeys in Cappadocia.

The direct route runs:

Göreme → Çavuşin → Avanos

At the end of June 2026, the timetable displayed in Göreme showed departures once an hour at :15, from 08:15 through 20:15.

Those were the posted details during my visit, not a permanent timetable. Check the current schedule locally.

Why Frequency Matters More Than Distance

I personally travelled from Çavuşin to Avanos by dolmuş. The ride took roughly eight minutes.

The journey itself is short.

The issue is frequency.

Missing an hourly dolmuş by two or three minutes can mean almost an hour of waiting. That is why it is worth planning the return before you start exploring.

What Can You Do in Avanos Without a Car?

Once you arrive, the main town is easy to explore on foot.

You can combine:

the Kızılırmak River;
the bridges;
Avanos Old Town;
pottery workshops;
cafés and restaurants.

What About Çavuşin?

Çavuşin works particularly well for the village and Rose Valley.

A simple independent plan is:

Göreme → dolmuş to Çavuşin → explore the village → hike Rose Valley → return to Çavuşin

You can then continue to Avanos if the timing works, but do not force every stop into the same day.

Göreme to Nevşehir: The Connection Most Tourists Miss

Nevşehir may not be the town you came to Cappadocia to explore, but it is extremely useful as a regional transport hub.

The official Göreme Belediyesi timetable currently shows departures between Göreme and Nevşehir approximately every 30 minutes through most of the daytime, with additional later services.

That makes Nevşehir the practical connection for journeys farther south.

Current Official Timetable

As of September 2026, the municipality lists:

Göreme → Nevşehir: every 30 minutes from 07:30 to 19:30, with later departures at 21:00 and 22:00.
Nevşehir → Göreme: every 30 minutes from 07:30 to 19:30, with a later departure at 22:30.

The important point is not memorising every departure. It is understanding that Nevşehir opens up routes that do not work as direct journeys from Göreme.

Check the current municipal timetable shortly before travelling.

Uçhisar Without a Car

Uçhisar is easy to include in a car-free itinerary using local transport or a taxi.

The Best Independent Option: Walk Back Through Pigeon Valley

This is where not having a car can actually improve the itinerary.

Take a dolmuş to Uçhisar, explore the castle, and use the Pigeon Valley trail as your scenic route back to Göreme.

The official trail information board at the Uçhisar entrance gives:

4.095 km
3.5 hours average walking time
a narrow and uneven path;
an overall descent toward Göreme.

I visited the upper Uçhisar viewpoint and trail entrance, but I did not complete the full route myself.

I Visited Both Underground Cities Without a Car — Here Is the Route

The clearest proof that Cappadocia’s public transport goes farther than many guides suggest is my own underground-city day.

In late June 2026, I travelled from Göreme to Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı entirely by public transport.

My route was:

Göreme → Nevşehir → Derinkuyu → Kaymaklı → Nevşehir → Göreme

It worked. It was also slower and required more attention to connections than joining a Green Tour.

Those two things can be true at the same time.

The Route, Step by Step

1. Göreme → Nevşehir

Take the regular local bus to Nevşehir.

2. Nevşehir → Derinkuyu

Find the departure point for the Derinkuyu service. Ask for Derinkuyu Koop or the district minibuses rather than assuming every bus leaves from the same terminal.

3. Visit Derinkuyu Underground City

Allow enough time to explore without watching the clock constantly.

4. Derinkuyu → Kaymaklı

Continue to Kaymaklı using the regional service.

5. Visit Kaymaklı Underground City

The two underground cities are different enough to justify visiting both if you are interested in them.

6. Kaymaklı → Nevşehir → Göreme

Return through Nevşehir.

What I Paid in June 2026

These are my actual fares from that day, not current ticket prices.

As of September 2026, regular daytime services continue between Nevşehir and Derinkuyu.

Do not build your day around an old screenshot of a timetable, especially if you plan to visit both underground cities.

Check the current departure times in Nevşehir before continuing south.

What This Means for Your Itinerary

You do not need a rental car or tour simply to reach Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı.

But you should allow a substantial part of the day, start early and pay attention to the return connections.

Paşabağ, Zelve and Devrent: Where Dolmuş Becomes Less Convenient

This is where a no-car itinerary starts to require more thought.

These attractions are geographically close to the northern towns, but they are not connected like a convenient tourist shuttle circuit.

Paşabağ

Paşabağ can be approached using the local transport corridor and additional walking, depending on the stop and route.

A taxi is the simpler option if you want to arrive directly at the attraction.

Zelve

Zelve is less convenient for a simple town-to-town dolmuş journey.

A direct taxi or an organised tour is usually more practical than trying to assemble the journey from several local connections.

Devrent

Devrent is primarily a short scenic stop.

It makes little sense to spend a large part of the day reaching it by public transport when the actual visit may take only 20–40 minutes.

When a Tour Starts Making Sense

A day such as:

Göreme → Paşabağ → Zelve → Devrent → Avanos

is very different from a simple Göreme → Avanos journey.

Each additional attraction creates another transport problem.

That is when a tour, private driver or a combination of taxis may save more time than trying to reproduce a driving itinerary with dolmuşes.

Ihlara and Soğanlı: Where Public Transport Stops Making Sense

Some places are technically reachable through regional transport but are poor fits for a short independent sightseeing day.

Ihlara Valley

Ihlara is far outside the central Göreme–Uçhisar–Çavuşin network.

If you want to combine the canyon with an underground city and Selime, an organised Green Tour or private driver is usually the more efficient solution.

That does not make the trip less independent. It simply avoids spending most of the day on connections.

Soğanlı Valley

Soğanlı is another substantial detour.

For a short first trip without a car, a private driver or suitable tour makes more sense than constructing a complicated regional-bus journey.

If you have several extra days and specifically enjoy independent transport, you can investigate the available connections. But do not assume a route is worthwhile simply because it is technically possible.

Uber Taxi in Cappadocia

Uber Taxi is available in Cappadocia.

You can use the app to request a taxi, making it a practical option when a dolmuş route is inconvenient or you want to travel directly to an attraction.

This works particularly well for:

short journeys;
reaching a specific trailhead;
attractions away from a convenient bus route;
returning when a public-transport connection no longer fits your plans.

For a remote pickup or time-sensitive transfer, arranging transport in advance is still sensible.

The important point is that you do not need to rent a car for an entire day just because one part of the itinerary requires a taxi.

Airport Transfers Without Renting a Car

Cappadocia’s two main airports are:

Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV)
Kayseri Airport (ASR)

For a car-free arrival, the simplest arrangement is usually a pre-booked shared shuttle or private transfer to your accommodation.

Kayseri is farther from Göreme, while Nevşehir is the closer of the two airports for most central Cappadocia destinations.

If you know your flight lands late, arrange the transfer before you fly rather than relying on whatever is available at the terminal.

Balloon Flights, ATV Tours and Other Activities

A rental car is often unnecessary for booked activities because many operators include hotel pickup.

On my own June 2026 balloon flight, my Göreme hotel pickup was at roughly 03:45, and I was back around 07:00.

The important rule is simple:

Check the exact booking for hotel pickup and the pickup area.

Do not assume every operator includes it, but do not rent a car for an activity that already provides transport.

One of the cleanest examples is:

Göreme → dolmuş to Uçhisar → Uçhisar Castle → Pigeon Valley → Göreme

You have one outward transport journey and finish the hike back in your base.

Another straightforward option is:

Göreme → dolmuş to Avanos → riverfront → Old Town → pottery workshop → dolmuş back to Göreme

The key is to build the day around a transport route, rather than selecting five attractions first and then trying to connect them.
