Kata Beach Phuket Guide: Kata Noi, Hotels & Things to Do
Kata Beach is one of Phuket’s most recognisable bays: a curve of soft sand, a small green island offshore and a neighbourhood where you can walk between restaurants, surf schools and evening markets. Just beyond the southern headland, Kata Noi feels quite different. It’s smaller, quieter and backed by some of the island’s best-known luxury resorts.
The two beaches are close, but choosing the wrong hotel can make a holiday less convenient than it looks on a map. Much of the land behind Kata Beach belongs to Club Med, so public access to the sand is concentrated near the ends of the bay. At Kata Noi, the most important detail is which side of the road your hotel room is on. Even rooms within the same resort can offer very different access to the beach.
This Kata Beach Phuket guide compares Kata and Kata Noi, explains how to reach both beaches, and covers 12 hotels, surfing, restaurants, night markets and transport. The aim is simple: find the part of Kata that works for your kind of trip, not just the room with the nicest photos.

Kata vs Kata Noi: Which Beach Is Better?
| Kata Beach (Kata Yai) | Kata Noi Beach | |
|---|---|---|
| Beach | Around 1.5 km; broad, popular bay | Around 800 m; smaller bay |
| Atmosphere | Lively, family-friendly, popular with surfers | Quieter, resort-oriented |
| Restaurants | Wide choice within walking distance | Fewer independent options |
| Accommodation | Budget hotels to luxury beachfront stays | Large beach resort and premium hotels |
| Main access issue | Club Med limits direct public approaches from inland streets | Hotel wings and the hill from Kata |
| Best for | Families, surfers, independent travellers | Couples, resort holidays, a quieter beach |
Kata works better if you want to eat somewhere different each night and move around without a vehicle. Kata Noi is appealing when the beach and the resort are the main reasons for the holiday. You can visit both during the same stay, but the road between them climbs over a headland rather than following a flat beachfront promenade.
Kata Beach Phuket: Sand, Swimming and the Club Med Access Problem

Kata Beach, also called Kata Yai, curves around a sheltered-looking bay with Koh Pu, the small green island, just offshore. The southern end has surf schools, restaurants and a cluster of beachfront hotels, while the northern end is useful for visitors staying toward Karon.
The water is often calmer during Phuket’s drier months, roughly November to April. During the southwest monsoon, generally May to October, Kata gets the waves that make it popular with surfers. Those same conditions can create dangerous rip currents for swimmers. Check lifeguard flags every day and never enter the water when red flags are displayed.
Where Are the Public Entrances to Kata Beach?
The important geographical detail is Club Med Phuket. Its grounds occupy much of the strip between Kata Road and the beach, so you usually cannot walk straight from a hotel in the middle of town across the resort to the sand. Public access is concentrated at the northern end, near the road toward Karon, and the southern end, near Soi Pakbang, surf schools and beachside restaurants.
That changes the meaning of “five minutes from the beach.” A hotel can appear a short distance from the shoreline on a map but require a detour to one of these public entrances. When comparing accommodation, check the walking route to an actual beach access point, not a straight-line distance across Club Med’s grounds.
There are loungers and umbrellas in designated areas, while food stalls and restaurants are easier to find near the entrances. The southern section is a particularly convenient base for a beach day followed by an evening meal.
Kata Noi Beach: Public Sand, Fewer Crowds and a Hill Between the Bays

Kata Noi is a smaller bay south of Kata, framed by green slopes and rocky headlands. Katathani Phuket Beach Resort occupies much of the land behind the shoreline, which can make the beach look private from a distance. It is not a private beach. Visitors can use public approaches from Kata Noi Road without staying at Katathani.
The atmosphere is usually more resort-focused than in Kata. There are a few restaurants along the road and in nearby hotels, but nothing like the choice around Kata Road and the night market. The beach can be lovely for swimming when conditions are calm, although the same monsoon warnings apply here too.
Walking from Kata to Kata Noi
Yes, via the road over the southern headland. From the southern end of Kata, allow roughly 15–25 minutes, depending on your starting point and walking pace. It’s a hilly route with limited pedestrian space in places, not a flat beach path. A taxi may be more comfortable with children, luggage or beach gear, particularly in the midday heat.
Snorkelling is sometimes possible near the rocky edges of the bays in calm, clear conditions. Avoid the rocks when waves are breaking, and don’t treat either beach as a guaranteed coral-reef snorkelling spot.
Where to Stay in Kata: Best Areas
| Area | Works well for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Kata | Families, markets, routes toward Karon | Actual walking distance to the north beach entrance |
| Central Kata | Restaurants, shops, varied hotel budgets | Club Med blocks direct shortcuts to the middle of the beach |
| Southern Kata | Surf schools, beachfront dining, two direct-beach hotels | Busy beach access during peak periods |
| Hills above Kata | Rooftop pools, sea views, boutique resorts | Steep walks and stairs |
| Kata Noi | Quieter beach, family resort or pool villas | Fewer shops and restaurants; uphill road to Kata |
For a first visit without a scooter, southern or northern Kata is usually more straightforward than an isolated hillside hotel. For a resort-based holiday, Kata Noi can be excellent, provided you choose the right wing or villa category.
12 Hotels in Kata and Kata Noi Worth Comparing
The buttons after each hotel open the Phuket hotel selection on Trip.com. Search for the property name and your travel dates to compare room categories and booking conditions.
| Hotel | Best for | Beach access |
|---|---|---|
| Beyond Kata | Traditional beachfront holiday | Direct access to Kata Beach |
| The Boathouse Phuket | Boutique stay and beachfront dining | Direct access to Kata Beach |
| Club Med Phuket | All-inclusive family activities | Resort access to Kata Beach; public access rules differ |
| OZO Phuket | Families, convenient north entrance | Short walk |
| Sawasdee Village | Atmospheric design and pool suites | Inland; beach shuttle |
| The SIS Kata | Sunset pool, couples, ages 12+ | Steep walk |
| Chanalai Garden Resort | Views and family facilities | Short walk, hillside layout |
| Kata Sea Breeze Resort | Family pools and room choice | Inland walk |
| Katathani Phuket Beach Resort | Large resort on Kata Noi | Depends on Thani, Bhuri or Vhari wing |
| The Shore at Katathani | Romantic private-pool villas | Kata Noi beachfront hillside |
| Mom Tri’s Villa Royale | Character and destination dining | Headland, steps toward Kata Noi |
| Kata Rocks | Architectural luxury and private pools | Rocky headland, not directly on sandy beach |
Beyond Kata
Beyond Kata sits at the southern end of the bay with direct access to the sand. Its beachfront pool, sea-facing spaces and easy access to restaurants make it a straightforward choice if you want to spend most days on Kata Beach. It’s a substantial, established resort rather than a secluded boutique hotel, and not every room has the same view. Choose it for the location rather than expecting a tiny, ultra-private property.
The Boathouse Phuket
The Boathouse is a smaller hotel beside the southern beach entrance, known for its restaurant right above the sand. You can spend the afternoon on the beach and walk to dinner without arranging transport. The atmosphere suits couples and travellers who care about dining and location more than water slides or a large kids’ programme. Beach-facing rooms cost more, so compare room categories rather than assuming every room overlooks the bay.
Club Med Phuket
Club Med makes sense for an all-inclusive holiday built around activities, meals and children’s programmes. The resort takes up an extensive part of the Kata beachfront and offers sports, entertainment and dedicated family facilities, including the newer Lai Thai family-focused area. It’s a different purchase from a room-only hotel: compare what’s included in the package and how much time you actually plan to spend on-site. If your plan is to explore Phuket and eat in different restaurants every day, the all-inclusive format may offer less value.
OZO Phuket
OZO is particularly practical near the northern access to Kata Beach. Families get a lagoon-style swimming pool, a children’s pool, waterslide and outdoor playground, while restaurants and shops are close enough for everyday outings. Standard rooms are compact, so larger families should look at the dedicated family or connecting-room categories. One detail worth knowing before booking: OZO does not have a supervised kids’ club, despite having children’s play facilities.
Sawasdee Village
Sawasdee Village is one of the most visually distinctive stays in Kata. Ornate Thai-inspired architecture, lush gardens, dramatic evening lighting and canal-style pools give it a completely different atmosphere from a standard beach hotel. Some suites open directly onto the water, while smaller entry-level rooms offer less space. The beach isn’t on the doorstep, but the hotel provides a scheduled shuttle. For guests who enjoy spending time around the pool, the property itself is a large part of the holiday.
The SIS Kata
The SIS is above southern Kata, with an elevated pool and restaurant looking toward the bay. It welcomes guests aged 12 and over, an important distinction from an adults-only resort. Selected rooms include private Jacuzzi facilities, although the room category determines the exact setup. The walk down to the beach is manageable for many people; the steep return trip in the heat is the trade-off for those views. It’s better for a couple seeking a sunset pool than for someone who wants a completely flat walk to the sea.
Chanalai Garden Resort
Chanalai Garden Resort offers two pools and sea-view room categories close to the southern beach approach. It can suit families who want a full-service hotel without paying for private-pool luxury. However, buildings are set at different levels, and stairs are part of daily life here. If mobility is an issue, request details about lift access and room location before booking.
Kata Sea Breeze Resort
This established resort has four swimming pools and several family-oriented room options. It’s worth comparing when pool time and space matter more than stylish new interiors. The hotel sits inland, so allow time to reach the beach using the public access routes. The interiors and room locations vary; check current photographs of the exact category rather than relying on the most attractive image of the property.
Katathani Phuket Beach Resort: Choose the Wing First
Katathani dominates much of the land behind Kata Noi, but not every guest stays directly beside the sand. The beachfront Thani Wing is the obvious choice if proximity to the sea is the priority. Bhuri Wing is a garden-oriented area across the road, while the newer Vhari Water Park Wing sits behind the main beachfront area and targets families who want water attractions.
| Wing | Location | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Thani | Main beachfront zone | Easy access to Kata Noi and sea-facing room options |
| Bhuri | Across the road | Tropical gardens and resort facilities |
| Vhari | Across the road, behind Thani | New family rooms, water slides, lazy river and kids’ facilities |
Vhari’s family attractions include a water park, four large slides, a lazy river and Club Tully play facilities. It began welcoming guests during a soft opening in late 2025, and the resort’s October 2026 updates describe additional facilities as open. Katathani says guests in all three wings can use facilities throughout the resort, subject to operational restrictions. For a family, Vhari may be the most exciting choice; for a couple who mainly wants the beach, Thani will usually make more sense. Confirm the precise wing at the time of booking.
The Shore at Katathani
The Shore is a romantic private-pool villa resort at the southern end of Kata Noi. Individual villas are arranged along the hillside with views of the sea, beach or greenery, depending on the category. It is marketed as adults-only; children under 12 are not accepted, so families should check the precise guest-age rules rather than assuming all adult-focused hotels use an 18+ minimum. A stay here is about privacy and spending time in the villa, not organised family entertainment. Hillside steps and premium rates are part of the trade-off.
Mom Tri’s Villa Royale
Mom Tri’s Villa Royale sits on the rocky headland above Kata Noi, with Thai-influenced buildings, terraces, gardens and art. Mom Tri’s Kitchen is a destination restaurant in its own right, known for views over the bay. This is the choice for someone who wants a smaller property with personality rather than a contemporary high-rise resort. Steps and changes in level are unavoidable, so the route to the beach is worth checking if easy walking matters.
Kata Rocks
Kata Rocks is on the southern Kata headland, not directly on Kata Noi Beach. Its contemporary villas feature private infinity pools and open views across the Andaman Sea. The architecture and privacy are the main reasons to book; you won’t be walking straight from a villa onto a broad sandy beach. It’s particularly attractive for a special occasion or a group that intends to spend time enjoying the villa itself. For daily, uncomplicated beach access, The Boathouse or Beyond Kata is more practical.
Choosing quickly: Beyond Kata and The Boathouse for immediate sand access; OZO and Club Med for family-oriented stays; Sawasdee Village for atmosphere; The SIS for elevated sunset views; Katathani’s Vhari for water-park facilities; The Shore or Kata Rocks for a private-pool splurge.
Surfing at Kata Beach
Kata is one of Phuket’s most established places to learn surfing, particularly during the southwest monsoon, approximately May to October. Surf schools and rental operators work near the beach, with group and individual instruction available when conditions allow.
If you’re a beginner, choose an instructor who checks the conditions, explains where to enter the water and keeps lessons away from unsuitable currents. Ask whether the board and other equipment are included and whether your class will be shared. Prices vary with the operator and lesson length, so compare the current offer rather than relying on an old price list. A beach that’s good for experienced surfing isn’t automatically safe for swimming.
During calmer months, Kata is more attractive for swimming and paddling than for reliable surfing. Neither activity should override lifeguard warnings.
Kata Night Market, Food and Evening Life
Kata Night Market
Kata Night Market is a covered food-and-shopping market off Patak Road. Look for the large gorilla figure near the entrance. It’s one of the easiest places to try several dishes in one evening without committing to a formal restaurant, and the roof is useful when a tropical shower rolls through.
The market is generally open daily from around noon until 11 PM, with more food stalls active after late afternoon. Around 6:30–7:30 PM is a useful time to arrive. Many dishes are roughly 60–150 THB, depending on what you order, and carrying small cash notes is practical.
Kata also has other shopping strips and informal evening stalls. Don’t confuse the covered Kata Night Market with separate walking-street areas.
Where to Eat in Kata and Kata Noi
| Place | Best reason to visit | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Sugar and Spice | Thai food and a broad menu | Kata neighbourhood |
| KIRI Restaurant | Casual Thai and international dishes | Kata Road area |
| The Boathouse Restaurant | Beachfront dinner | Southern Kata |
| SKA Bar | Informal drinks beside the rocks | Southern Kata Beach |
| Mom Tri’s Kitchen | Special-occasion dinner with a view | Headland above Kata Noi |
| The Sundeck | Sunset drinks and dining | Hills above Kata Noi |
| After Beach Bar | Laid-back panoramic terrace | Viewpoint road |
For an easy meal near the main resort streets, Sugar and Spice or KIRI are practical choices with menus that accommodate different tastes. The covered night market is better if you prefer trying several small dishes rather than sitting down for a long dinner.
The Boathouse Restaurant and SKA Bar make more sense when you want to stay close to the sand. Above Kata Noi, Mom Tri’s Kitchen is the stronger choice for a special dinner, while The Sundeck and After Beach Bar are about elevated views and sunset atmosphere. Expect to arrange transport for those hillside venues unless you’re already staying nearby, and check opening hours before making a special journey.
More Things to Do Near Kata

Wat Kitti Sangkharam offers a quieter stop away from the busy beach streets. It’s an active Buddhist temple; dress appropriately and be considerate of worshippers. For the classic photograph of Kata Noi, Kata and Karon together, head to Karon Viewpoint on the road toward Nai Harn. Despite its name, the viewpoint isn’t within an easy walk of the main Karon resort area or most Kata hotels.
For a full day away from the beach, explore southern Phuket or take a boat excursion to nearby islands. Departures to Phi Phi, Racha and Phang Nga Bay use piers in other parts of Phuket, so check transfer time and whether hotel pickup is included. The Ferries & Longtail Boats from Phuket guide explains which piers serve which routes.
Check dates and party size for a Phi Phi day trip. Confirm whether pickup from your Kata or Kata Noi hotel is included, along with the weather cancellation terms.
Getting Around Kata Without a Scooter
Kata is walkable when you stay near Kata Road, the southern beach entrance or the northern approach. The hills above the beach, the road to Kata Noi and journeys to southern viewpoints are a different matter. For those, compare Grab, Bolt and inDrive rather than assuming one service is always cheapest.
The Phuket Smart Bus runs between the airport, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai. The current published fare on the airport-to-Rawai route is 100 THB per ride, with cash and supported contactless-card payments. Check the official Smart Bus timetable and stop locations; traffic can affect arrivals. For a wider transport comparison, see Getting Around Phuket.
If you’re planning several beach and viewpoint stops in one day, renting a car can be useful. Confirm parking at the hotel, Thai licence requirements and insurance terms before booking.
How to Get from Phuket Airport to Kata or Kata Noi
The airport is in northern Phuket. A private car journey to Kata typically takes around 60–90 minutes, and can take longer in heavy traffic. Kata Noi is a little farther south. The Smart Bus is a budget option if its schedule and stop work for you; a private transfer is often easier after a late flight or when staying up a steep hill.
Compare the full vehicle price, luggage allowance and meeting point before booking.

If you haven’t bought a ticket yet, compare the total fare with baggage for your dates.
Mobile data is handy for finding the correct beach entrance, contacting your driver and checking transport apps. If your phone supports eSIM, confirm that the plan covers Thailand and check its activation instructions before checkout.
Kata vs Kata Noi vs Karon vs Patong
| Area | Main advantage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Kata | Surfing, restaurants and a scenic bay | Detours to public beach entrances |
| Kata Noi | Smaller beach and premium resorts | Limited dining outside hotels |
| Karon | Long, spacious shore and varied resorts | Distances between hotel areas |
| Patong | Nightlife, shopping and transport options | Crowded, heavily developed centre |
The Karon Beach Guide compares neighbouring hotels, restaurants and beach access. For a broader comparison of the three main resort areas, read Patong vs Kata vs Karon. The Patong Beach Guide also covers quieter nearby beaches if you’re considering staying farther north.
Best Time to Visit Kata and Kata Noi
The drier months, approximately November to April, generally offer more favourable conditions for swimming and beach days. May to October brings the southwest monsoon and often more useful waves for surfing, but also a higher risk of rough seas and disruptions to boat excursions.
If travelling during the wet season, choose a hotel with a good pool and don’t build every day around swimming or boats. The Phuket Packing List covers what to bring; the Phuket Travel Checklist helps with booking and pre-departure planning.
A Simple Day Around Kata

| Lunch | Thai restaurant on Kata Road |
| Afternoon | Kata Noi, Wat Kitti Sangkharam or a drive to Karon Viewpoint |
| Sunset | Beachfront dinner or a hillside terrace |

Kata Beach FAQ
Is Kata Beach suitable for families?
Yes. Its accommodation range, restaurants and calm-season beach conditions appeal to families. During the monsoon, sea safety is a priority; choose a hotel with a pool and follow lifeguards’ instructions.
Is Kata Noi private?
No. Kata Noi is a public beach, with public access from Kata Noi Road. Resort grounds behind it are private property.
Can you walk from Kata to Kata Noi?
Yes, via the road over the headland. From southern Kata, plan approximately 15–25 minutes; parts are steep or lack generous pedestrian space.
Which hotels are actually on Kata Beach?
Beyond Kata and The Boathouse have direct access to the sand. Many other hotels are close on a map but require walking to a public access point.
When can beginners surf at Kata?
The main surf season is generally May to October. Beginners should take a lesson and follow current safety advice rather than assume every day is suitable.
Is Kata Night Market open every night?
The covered market is generally open daily, with the busiest food service in the evening. Individual vendor hours may vary.
Is Kata better than Karon?
Kata is more compact and has a stronger surf scene. Karon offers a longer, wider beach and more large resorts. The best choice depends on where you plan to stay and how you’ll get around.
The Bottom Line
Stay in Kata if you want restaurants, the night market, surfing and several walkable hotel options. Choose Kata Noi if you would rather spend more time on a scenic beach or at a resort, with fewer places to visit on foot. Before booking, check the actual beach entrance, any hills on the walking route and, at Katathani, the exact wing. Those practical details will affect your holiday more than another generic five-star label.
