Karon Beach Phuket Guide: Hotels, Restaurants & Things to Do
Karon Beach is one of Phuket’s longest beaches, with a wide stretch of sand, sunset views, a lively temple market and hotels ranging from small family-run properties to five-star resorts. It’s also famous for something unusual: dry sand that squeaks beneath your feet, almost like fresh snow.
Karon sits between Patong and Kata on Phuket’s west coast. It’s quieter than central Patong, but there’s no shortage of restaurants, shops, bars or places to spend an evening. You can stay here for a week without feeling that you need to travel somewhere else every day.
The important decision is where to stay. Some hotels open directly onto the beach, others face the sea across a road, and a few occupy steep hillsides where getting to your room involves a fair amount of walking.
This Karon Beach Phuket guide covers the three main areas, ten hotels worth considering, local restaurants, things to do and practical transport options.

| Best for | Couples, families and travellers who want a spacious beach |

What Is Karon Beach Like?
Karon is a long, open bay with pale sand, a broad shoreline and hills behind the resort area. Compared with Kata, it feels less enclosed. Compared with Patong, there’s more space between the main clusters of activity.
Even during the busy season, the central stretch can feel relatively spacious. It’s an excellent beach for long walks, particularly early in the morning or toward sunset.
Why Does the Sand Squeak?
Karon’s famous squeaky sand produces a soft, high-pitched sound when you walk across certain dry sections. The effect comes from the way the sand grains move and rub against each other under suitable conditions.
Try walking barefoot above the waterline rather than on wet sand. The sound isn’t equally noticeable everywhere, but it’s a small detail that makes Karon different from most beaches on Phuket.
Is Karon Beach Safe for Swimming?
Karon can have clear water and pleasant swimming conditions, especially during calmer periods of the dry season. However, the beach faces the open Andaman Sea and becomes exposed to powerful waves during the southwest monsoon, generally from May to October.
Rip currents are a serious hazard here. Never enter the water when red flags are displayed, even if the weather looks sunny. Families visiting during the rainy season should consider hotels with good swimming pools rather than relying on the sea every day.
Sun Loungers, Shade and Facilities
Sun loungers and umbrellas are available in designated areas, although their exact locations and arrangements can change. Some trees provide shade behind the beach, but much of the sand is exposed to the sun.
Restaurants and shops are easier to find near the main northern and southern beach access points. If you’re planning a long walk through central Karon, bring drinking water rather than assuming there will be a shop immediately behind every section of the beach.
Where to Stay in Karon: North, Centre or South?
Karon is longer than it looks on a hotel booking map. Choosing the right area can save a lot of walking and unnecessary taxi rides.
| Area | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| North Karon | Restaurants, nightlife and temple market | Walkable streets near Karon Circle |
| Central Karon | Large resorts and beach walks | Wide beach, gardens and several hotels across the coastal road |
| South Karon | Couples, restaurants and access to Kata | Beach clubs, distinctive hotels and dining options |
| Hills above Karon | Views, pools and privacy | Steep slopes and greater dependence on transport |
North Karon: Best for Restaurants and Walking
Karon Circle is a useful landmark near the northern end of the beach. From here, Patak Road and the surrounding streets lead to restaurants, bars, pharmacies, massage shops and convenience stores.
Wat Suwan Khirikhet, home to Karon Temple Market, is approximately 500 metres inland from the circle. This makes northern Karon a practical place to stay if you enjoy going out in the evening without arranging transport.
However, don’t confuse the central village area with the far northern beachfront. Centara Grand Beach Resort occupies a more secluded position and is around two kilometres from Karon Centre.
Central Karon: Best for Large Resorts
Central Karon has the longest uninterrupted stretches of sand and several major resorts, including Thavorn Palm Beach Resort and Paradox Resort Phuket.
Many of these hotels occupy substantial grounds with swimming pools, gardens and multiple accommodation buildings. That can be wonderful for a relaxing resort holiday, but it also means that the distance from reception to the beach may be longer than expected.
The main coastal road separates much of this area from the sand. Hotels described as beachfront may face the sea without standing directly on the beach.
South Karon: Best for Dining and Access to Kata
Southern Karon has a different atmosphere, with a concentration of restaurants, smaller hotels and several particularly interesting resorts.
Beyond Karon and Marina Phuket Resort both offer direct access to the sand. TANN Beach Club, On the Rock Restaurant and Dino Park Mini Golf are also around this end of the beach.
Another advantage is proximity to Kata. Staying in southern Karon makes it easier to explore both resort areas without spending so much time in taxis.
What to Do in Karon Beach
Visit Karon Temple Market
Karon Temple Market is one of the best evening activities in the area. It takes place in the grounds of Wat Suwan Khirikhet, usually on Tuesdays and Fridays from approximately 4 PM to 10 PM.
The temple grounds fill with clothing stalls, souvenirs, fruit, grilled food, Thai snacks and desserts. You can try roti, chicken skewers, mango sticky rice or freshly cooked noodles while browsing the market.
Entry is generally free, and the market is easy to reach on foot from many northern Karon hotels. Bring some cash, especially for smaller food stalls.
The temple itself is worth visiting outside market hours. It’s an active Buddhist religious site, so dress respectfully and avoid interrupting ceremonies.
Browse Karon Bazaar
Karon Bazaar, also called Karon Plaza, is a more permanent shopping area near the beachfront road.
It sells beachwear, clothes, bags, souvenirs and accessories. Unlike the temple market, you don’t need to plan your visit around Tuesday or Friday.
It’s convenient for picking up something you’ve forgotten or browsing after a beach walk, although it isn’t a traditional local food market.
Play Mini-Golf at Dino Park
Dino Park Mini Golf is near the southern end of Karon, close to Kata. Its 18-hole miniature golf course runs through dinosaur-themed scenery with rocks, tropical plants and prehistoric figures.
It’s a good option for families or anyone who wants something different from swimming and sunbathing. Check current ticket prices and operating hours before going, particularly during the rainy season.
Spend Sunset at TANN Beach Club
TANN Beach Club occupies a beachfront position at the southern end of Karon. There’s a large wooden terrace, dining areas, music, drinks and seating overlooking the sea.
It’s particularly attractive around sunset, when the light falls across Karon Bay.
TANN normally operates from 11 AM to 11 PM, but special events may have different arrangements. Some daybeds and seating areas require reservations or minimum spending, so check the conditions rather than assuming everything is included in ordinary restaurant admission.
Visit Karon Viewpoint
Despite its name, Karon Viewpoint isn’t located directly on Karon Beach. It’s farther south, above Kata Noi, on the road toward Nai Harn.
The viewpoint overlooks three bays: Kata Noi, Kata and Karon. It’s one of Phuket’s best-known coastal panoramas and a worthwhile stop if you’re exploring the south of the island.
You will generally need a taxi or your own transport. It’s not a practical walk from the main Karon hotel areas.
Take a Day Trip from Karon
Karon is a useful base for exploring southern Phuket and joining island excursions.
Phi Phi Islands and Phang Nga Bay are popular choices, although boats depart from piers elsewhere on Phuket rather than Karon Beach itself. Before booking, check whether hotel pickup is included, how long the transfer takes and what happens if rough seas affect the itinerary.
For a less boat-focused day, you could combine Karon Viewpoint with Kata Noi, Nai Harn and a few stops along the southern coastline.
Check dates and party size for a Phi Phi day trip below. Confirm pickup coverage for your Karon hotel and the weather cancellation terms before booking.
Best Restaurants in Karon Beach

Karon has plenty of places to eat outside the hotels. Some of the most interesting restaurants are inland rather than directly on the beachfront, and the difference in atmosphere can be substantial.
| Restaurant | Good for | Location |
|---|---|---|
| YA Restaurant | Casual Thai food | Near Karon Temple |
| Pinto Karon | Phuket and Southern Thai cuisine | Patak Soi 20 |
| The Pad Thai Shop | Affordable noodles and rice dishes | Inland Karon |
| Two Chefs Karon Beach | International food and live music | Near Karon Circle |
| On the Rock | Dinner with sea views | Marina Phuket Resort |
| TANN Beach Club | Sunset drinks and beachside dining | South Karon |
| Coffee Talk | Coffee, pastries and a relaxed break | Central beachfront |
Thai Food Without Resort Prices
YA Restaurant is a small, casual Thai restaurant near Karon Temple on Patak Road. It’s a useful option for a straightforward lunch or dinner, particularly if you’re already visiting the temple area. The menu includes familiar dishes such as pad Thai, curries, stir-fries and rice dishes.
Pinto Karon, on Patak Soi 20, is more interesting if you want to explore Phuket and Southern Thai flavours. Its menu includes regional dishes alongside familiar Thai favourites. The restaurant is inland, so don’t expect to find it immediately behind the beach.
For something simpler, The Pad Thai Shop is known for inexpensive noodles and rice dishes. It has an informal setting and is better suited to breakfast or lunch than a late dinner. The shop is also inland, which is worth remembering if you’re walking from the beachfront.
Restaurants for an Evening Out
Two Chefs Karon Beach, near Karon Circle, is an established international restaurant and bar. The menu covers Thai and Western dishes, while live music makes it a more sociable option for an evening out.
On the Rock Restaurant sits on the rocky headland at Marina Phuket Resort. Its open-air setting overlooks the sea, making the location particularly attractive around sunset. Seafood is a major part of the menu, but other Thai and international dishes are available. Reserve ahead if you want a table with the best views.
TANN Beach Club offers a different experience, with beachside dining, music and a livelier atmosphere. It’s worth considering if you want to spend the evening in one place rather than move between several bars.
For coffee or something sweet during the day, Coffee Talk near Thavorn Palm Beach Resort is a convenient stop along the central beachfront.
Best Hotels in Karon Beach: 10 Places Worth Comparing
Karon has a broad range of accommodation, but hotels with similar star ratings can provide very different holidays.
The biggest differences aren’t always the rooms. Direct access to the sand, walking distance to restaurants, internal resort layout and swimming-pool facilities can matter far more once you arrive.
The buttons after each hotel open the Phuket hotel selection on Trip.com. Enter the property name and your dates to compare current room offers.
Karon Hotel Comparison
| Hotel | Best for | Beach access |
|---|---|---|
| Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket | Families and water slides | Direct |
| Beyond Karon | Adults-only holidays | Direct |
| Marina Phuket Resort | Tropical villas and gardens | Direct via resort paths |
| Thavorn Palm Beach Resort | Family pools and activities | Across coastal road |
| Paradox Resort Phuket | Large gardens and varied accommodation | Across coastal road |
| Centara Karon Resort Phuket | Renovated family accommodation | Walk through town |
| Karon Sea Sands Resort | Walkable location | Across coastal road |
| Baan Sailom Resort | Smaller, simpler hotel | Short walk |
| Avista Grande Phuket Karon – MGallery | Design and spacious rooms | Short walk |
| Mandarava Resort & Spa | Hillside pools and privacy | Shuttle or walk |
Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket
Centara Grand occupies a secluded position at the northern end of Karon, with direct access to the sand and a large water park built into the resort grounds.
Families are particularly well served here. The facilities include water slides, a lazy river, children’s pools, a kids’ club and several dining options. There are also suites and villas for guests who want more space or additional privacy.
The location is the main trade-off. While the beach is immediately accessible, Karon’s central restaurant area is approximately two kilometres away. This hotel makes most sense if you expect to use its facilities extensively rather than head into town every evening.
Beyond Karon
Beyond Karon is one of the area’s more appealing options for couples. The adults-only hotel has 81 sea-facing rooms and sits directly on the southern end of Karon Beach.
Unlike many hotels along the main road, guests can walk from the property onto the sand without crossing traffic. There are swimming pools, restaurants and bars, while the surrounding southern Karon area provides additional dining options.
Guests must be at least 18 years old. The atmosphere is quieter and more intimate than at the large family resorts, although the facilities are more limited and some areas involve stairs.
Marina Phuket Resort
Marina Phuket Resort feels very different from a conventional beachfront hotel. Its villas and rooms are hidden among dense tropical greenery on the southern headland, connected by paths and wooden walkways.
Guests have direct access to Karon Beach from the resort grounds. On the Rock Restaurant is another attraction, and Dino Park Mini Golf is nearby.
The setting is particularly attractive if you prefer gardens, privacy and a more unusual property. However, the resort’s natural terrain includes steps and slopes, so it’s less convenient for travellers with limited mobility.
Thavorn Palm Beach Resort
Thavorn Palm Beach Resort is an excellent option for families who want more than an ordinary swimming pool. The grounds contain extensive tropical gardens, several pools, large water slides and a small Animal Village.
The beach is immediately opposite the property, across the coastal road. There are also restaurants and cafes within the resort, making it convenient for days spent close to the hotel.
Renovation notice: Palm Shade Pool is scheduled to remain closed for renovation from September 1, 2026, until February 15, 2027. The resort states that its other three pools remain available. Check the latest arrangements before booking rooms near the affected area.
Paradox Resort Phuket
Formerly Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach, Paradox occupies a large tropical garden property close to Karon’s restaurants and temple area.
Accommodation ranges from standard rooms to villas and residences, so the experience depends considerably on which category you book. The resort’s grounds are attractive, but the distance between your room, the pools and the beach entrance can be significant.
Pool access also varies by accommodation category. Coconut Grove Pool is reserved for villa guests, while the Residence Infinity Pool serves residence accommodation. The hotel has also listed Saeng Chan Pool as temporarily closed, so verify current availability if pool facilities are important to your stay.
Centara Karon Resort Phuket
Centara Karon Resort is a separate property from Centara Grand. It sits closer to Karon’s town centre, making it more practical for travellers who like walking to restaurants and shops.
The resort underwent substantial renovation before reopening with refreshed accommodation and facilities for the 2024–25 season. Its swimming pools, family rooms and children’s activities make it a good option for a comfortable resort holiday.
The disadvantage is that it isn’t directly on the beach. Reaching the sand involves walking through the surrounding streets, although the location is convenient for everyday services.
Karon Sea Sands Resort
Karon Sea Sands is worth considering primarily for its location. The hotel stands opposite the beach near Karon Circle, with restaurants, shops and the local market area within walking distance.
There is a swimming pool and a choice of accommodation suitable for couples and families. It doesn’t have the huge gardens or water attractions of the larger resorts, but those facilities aren’t essential for every traveller.
If you want to spend your days on the beach and your evenings exploring restaurants without needing a scooter, this is one of the more practical locations on the list.
Baan Sailom Resort
Baan Sailom is a smaller hotel near southern Karon, with a pool, restaurant and access to nearby shops and dining options.
It’s a sensible property to compare if you expect to spend most of your time outside the hotel rather than using extensive resort facilities. The accommodation is simpler, and the property doesn’t try to compete with the larger luxury resorts.
Don’t assume it will always be the cheapest option. Compare prices for your actual dates, because smaller hotels can sometimes cost as much as larger properties during busy periods.
Avista Grande Phuket Karon – MGallery
Avista Grande is one of the more distinctive design hotels in southern Karon. Its interiors draw inspiration from Phuket’s Sino-Portuguese architecture and tin-mining heritage.
Rooms are spacious, starting at approximately 53 square metres, and the hotel includes restaurants, a spa and a swimming pool. The setting appeals to couples and travellers who value contemporary accommodation and attractive interiors.
It isn’t directly on the beach, and views vary between room categories. If seeing the sea from your room matters, check the exact category rather than relying on photographs of premium accommodation.
Mandarava Resort & Spa
Mandarava occupies a hillside above northern Karon, with villa-style buildings surrounded by tropical gardens and five swimming pools spread across different levels.
The property’s main appeal is its atmosphere. It’s a good choice for travellers who prefer spending time beside quiet pools, enjoying views and relaxing away from the busiest beachfront streets.
The hotel provides a scheduled shuttle to Karon Beach, approximately 700 metres away. But the more important consideration is the terrain: moving around the property involves slopes and stairs, making it less suitable for anyone who needs a flat, easily accessible resort.
Which Karon Hotel Should You Book?
For direct access to the sand, compare Centara Grand, Beyond Karon and Marina Phuket Resort. They’re very different properties, so choose according to whether you want family entertainment, an adults-only atmosphere or tropical bungalows.
For families who prioritize pools, Centara Grand and Thavorn Palm Beach are particularly interesting. If walking to restaurants matters more, Karon Sea Sands, Centara Karon and Paradox may be more convenient.
Mandarava is worth considering when the resort atmosphere itself is the priority and you don’t mind slopes or using a shuttle.
Getting Around Karon Without a Scooter
You can stay in Karon without renting a scooter, particularly around Karon Circle or southern Karon. Restaurants and everyday services are within walking distance in these areas, although visiting other Phuket beaches usually requires transport.
Phuket Smart Bus
The Phuket Smart Bus runs along the west coast through Patong, Karon and Kata, continuing toward Rawai. Its airport-to-Rawai service currently has a flat fare of 100 THB per journey.
The bus is useful for budget travel between beach areas, but check the stop location and timetable before relying on it. Traffic can affect journey times, and your hotel may still be some distance from the nearest stop.
Check the Phuket Smart Bus timetable.
Grab, Bolt and inDrive
Ride-hailing apps are useful for trips to Patong, Kata, Phuket Town and viewpoints. Prices depend on distance, demand and driver availability, so it’s worth comparing more than one app.
Motorbike taxi options can be practical for solo travellers, but always use a properly fitting helmet. Renting and riding a scooter yourself requires the appropriate driving licence and insurance.
Renting a Car in Phuket
A rental car makes more sense if you’re planning to explore several areas rather than spend every day around your hotel.
For example, a day driving between Karon Viewpoint, Nai Harn, Rawai and other southern beaches is easier with your own transport than with repeated taxi bookings.
Thailand drives on the left. Check licence requirements, insurance coverage, deposits and parking arrangements before confirming a rental.
Getting from Phuket Airport to Karon Beach
Phuket International Airport is in the north of the island. Travelling to Karon usually takes approximately 60–90 minutes by car, depending on traffic and your hotel’s exact location.
| Option | Suitable for |
|---|---|
| Private airport transfer | Families, luggage and late arrivals |
| Taxi or ride-hailing | Flexible travel after landing |
| Phuket Smart Bus | Budget travellers with manageable luggage |
| Rental car | Visitors planning to explore Phuket independently |
If you’re arriving after a long flight, a pre-booked transfer removes the need to arrange a car at the airport. Compare the full vehicle price, luggage allowance and meeting arrangements rather than choosing solely by the headline fare.
Compare pickup arrangements and the final vehicle price before booking.
For more details about pickup locations, airport taxis and bus options, read my Phuket Airport Transfers Guide.
If you haven’t booked your flight yet, compare fares with baggage included for your travel dates.
Mobile Data and eSIM
Mobile internet is useful immediately after landing, especially for navigation, contacting a transfer driver and using taxi apps.
If your phone supports eSIM, you can arrange a data plan before departure. Choose a package that covers Thailand and check its validity, data allowance and activation conditions carefully.
Karon vs Kata vs Patong: Which Is Better?
| Patong | Karon | Kata | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Busy and energetic | Spacious and relaxed | Compact and lively |
| Beach | Urban and busy | Long, wide shoreline | Smaller curved bay |
| Nightlife | Clubs and Bangla Road | Restaurants and bars | Restaurants and casual bars |
| Families | Depends on hotel location | Excellent resort choices | Good family options |
| Without transport | Convenient in the centre | Depends on hotel area | Convenient in selected areas |
| Main attraction | Nightlife and shopping | Beach and resort variety | Scenic bay and beach activities |
Patong is the strongest choice for nightlife and shopping. Kata feels more compact and is particularly attractive if you like a smaller bay and easy access to cafes and restaurants.
Karon sits between the two in terms of atmosphere. It’s developed enough for a comfortable holiday but still offers long beach walks, plenty of space and a more relaxed evening scene.

If you’re still deciding which destination suits your travel dates, my Phuket vs Krabi vs Koh Samui comparison explains the differences between the islands and coastlines.
Is Karon Beach Worth Visiting in the Rainy Season?

Karon is open year-round, but the experience changes considerably during the southwest monsoon.
Rain doesn’t necessarily continue all day, and there can still be sunny periods. The bigger concern for a beach holiday is the sea, which may be too rough for swimming.
If you’re visiting between May and October, choose accommodation with a good pool and plan some alternatives to beach activities. Restaurants, markets and sightseeing can still make the trip enjoyable, provided the weather and road conditions allow.
Boat excursions are more weather-dependent. Build some flexibility into your itinerary and follow the operator’s safety decisions.
For clothing, sun protection and rainy-season essentials, see my Phuket Packing List.
A Relaxed Day in Karon
| Time | What to do |
|---|---|
| Morning | Walk along Karon Beach and enjoy the cooler temperatures |
| Late morning | Coffee or breakfast near the beachfront |
| Afternoon | Hotel pool, Dino Park or a drive to Karon Viewpoint |
| Sunset | Beach walk, TANN or On the Rock |
| Evening | Karon Temple Market on Tuesday or Friday, or dinner around Karon Circle |
You don’t need to fill every hour with attractions. If you’ve booked one of Karon’s large family resorts or a quiet hillside hotel, spending part of the day enjoying the property is a perfectly good plan.
Frequently Asked Questions About Karon Beach
Is Karon Beach better than Patong?
Karon is generally better suited to travellers who prioritize a spacious beach, resort facilities and relaxed evenings. Patong has a much larger concentration of nightlife and shopping.
Can you swim at Karon Beach?
Yes, when conditions are safe. Strong waves and rip currents can develop, particularly during the southwest monsoon, so follow lifeguard warnings and avoid swimming when red flags are displayed.
Which Karon hotels have direct beach access?
Among the hotels reviewed here, Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket, Beyond Karon and Marina Phuket Resort provide direct access to the sand without crossing the main coastal road.
Is Karon good without renting a scooter?
Yes, especially if you stay near Karon Circle or in southern Karon. Hotels on hillsides and secluded resort properties may require more frequent taxis or shuttles.
When is Karon Temple Market open?
The market usually operates on Tuesday and Friday evenings, approximately 4 PM to 10 PM, in the grounds of Wat Suwan Khirikhet.
Can you walk from Karon to Kata?
Yes, particularly from southern Karon. From the northern end of Karon Beach, the distance is much greater, and the walk can become uncomfortable in the midday heat.
Is Karon suitable for families?
Yes. Several resorts have large pools, water slides and children’s facilities. However, sea conditions can be dangerous during the monsoon, so families should not rely on swimming in the sea every day.
Is Karon Beach Right for You?
Karon works particularly well if you want a long sandy beach, a good selection of hotels and enough restaurants to enjoy evenings without travelling to Patong.
The most important detail is your hotel’s location. Staying near Karon Circle or southern Karon makes everyday outings easier, while larger beachfront and hillside resorts are better suited to travellers who want to spend more time within the property.
Choose the area first, compare the hotels second, and check actual beach access before paying extra for a beachfront room.
