What is special about Özkonak Underground City?
The galleries are connected by tunnels, with storage areas, stables and spaces used for wine production. Circular stone doors could close off passages from inside. Look at how each doorway relates to the adjoining room: defence shaped the layout.
Narrow holes link different parts of the complex for communication. Alongside the ventilation shafts and sealing stones, they show how people could keep parts of the settlement connected while controlling movement through it.
The wider complex has not been fully cleared. The visitor route covers only part of it, so the size of the underground settlement and the area you can actually explore are different things.
How long do you need at Özkonak Underground City?
Use 45–60 minutes underground as a planning allowance, not a fixed tour duration. Narrow passages, groups ahead of you and time spent looking at individual rooms can change the pace.
Allow roughly 1–1.5 hours at the site including tickets and entry, then add your travel time. A morning visit leaves room for lunch and another stop without relying on last entry.
Is Özkonak claustrophobic?
