One of Özkonak’s most unusual features is its network of extremely narrow communication holes between different parts of the complex. Some are only around 5 cm wide, allowing communication and airflow even when rooms or passages were closed.
The defensive system adds another layer. Small openings positioned above some sealed passages allowed people inside to defend the corridor against intruders, including by pouring hot liquids through the openings.
That is what makes Özkonak memorable. You are not simply walking through a collection of rooms carved into rock; you are looking at a settlement designed around communication, ventilation, storage, defence and survival underground.

How long do you need at Özkonak Underground City?
Allow around 45–60 minutes inside.
The visitor route is compact, but the pace depends on how busy the tunnels are and how much time you spend examining individual rooms and defensive features.
For the overall itinerary, allow roughly 1 to 1.5 hours once you include parking, tickets and getting in and out without rushing.
That is short enough to leave plenty of time for another stop on the same day.
Is Özkonak claustrophobic?
It can be.
A compact underground city does not mean wide, comfortable corridors. Some passages are low and narrow enough that you need to bend or crouch, and movement through the tightest sections can be single-file.
If you have strong claustrophobia, significant knee or back problems, or limited mobility, take the physical layout seriously. The rooms can feel considerably more open once you reach them, but moving through confined passages is part of the experience.
What to wear
Wear comfortable shoes with good grip and keep bulky bags to a minimum. Uneven surfaces are easier to manage when your hands are free, and a large backpack becomes annoying quickly when you need to crouch through a narrow tunnel.

“I am staying in Avanos and want to add an underground city without restructuring the whole day,” Özkonak is the stronger fit.
How to get to Özkonak Underground City from Avanos
Özkonak is around 13–14 km from Avanos town.
By car
A rental car is the simplest option. You control your arrival time, can continue directly to another Cappadocia stop and do not need to coordinate a return journey. Parking is available at the site.
By taxi
A taxi also works well for a straightforward Avanos–Özkonak trip.
If you plan to combine the underground city with another attraction afterwards, agree on the route or return pickup in advance rather than assuming a taxi will always be waiting outside when you finish.
Without a car
Without your own transport, keep the plan flexible.
Short distances around Cappadocia do not always translate into convenient point-to-point public transport. Confirm the current local minibus connection before travelling and keep a taxi as a backup, particularly if you are combining Özkonak with another stop.

Crowds also matter more underground than they do at an open viewpoint. A narrow tunnel that feels atmospheric with a few people inside feels very different when two groups meet in opposite directions.
