Do you need one night or two nights in Avanos?
One night works with an early arrival on Day 1 and a late departure on Day 2. Confirm luggage storage with your hotel before planning the second day away from town.
For two full sightseeing days, arrive the evening before Day 1 and stay two nights. A late arrival on Day 1 followed by departure on Day 3 gives you only one complete day in between.

Day 1: Spend the day in Avanos
Leave time for lunch between the river walk and your afternoon activity. A fixed workshop booking should set the pace for the rest of Day 1.
Morning: start at the Kızılırmak River
Start at the Kızılırmak riverfront, cross the bridges and explore the shops around the centre. Keep this part of the morning flexible so an arrival delay does not derail the rest of the day.
Late morning or early afternoon: try a pottery workshop
At a pottery wheel, you can try shaping the clay yourself. Ask how much hands-on time is included, whether firing is offered and when any finished piece could be collected or shipped.

Optional: add Güray Museum
Güray Museum displays ceramics in an underground exhibition space. Add it after the workshop when pottery is a main interest; otherwise keep the time for lunch and Old Town.
Late afternoon: walk through Avanos Old Town
The historic streets climb above modern Avanos through stone houses, old mansions, wooden balconies and narrow residential lanes.
Finish with dinner in town. Staying overnight means you can return to your room without arranging a journey back to Göreme.
Day 2: Choose one route
Choose one Day 2 route and confirm transport before setting off. Check each site’s current opening and last-entry times, especially for an autumn or winter visit.

Option A: Çavuşin → Paşabağ → Zelve
This route combines Çavuşin village with the fairy chimneys of Paşabağ and the rock-cut settlement at Zelve. It suits a first visit with a car or a pre-arranged driver.
Start in Çavuşin
Explore Çavuşin village before continuing to Paşabağ. Keep to open paths and respect barriers around the rock-cut settlement.
Çavuşin Church (Nicephorus Phocas) is listed as closed for restoration. Plan this stop around the village; do not count on entering that church.
Continue to Paşabağ
Paşabağ is where you get the concentrated multi-headed fairy chimneys associated with the former “Valley of the Priests.”
Paşabağ and Zelve share one admission ticket. Keep it for the second site; the Balıklı and Üzümlü churches inside Zelve are closed.
Give Zelve enough time
Budget around two hours for Zelve as a planning allowance, with extra time for breaks. Its three valleys involve uneven ground and slopes, so shorten the walk when needed.
Option B: Özkonak Underground City → Devrent Valley
Özkonak is around 14 km from Avanos. Visit it first, then return toward Avanos and continue to Devrent. These stops sit on different sides of town, so allow for the drive between them.
Morning: Özkonak Underground City
Özkonak’s galleries and tunnels are cut into volcanic rock. Read the visitor guide before committing to an underground visit, particularly when enclosed passages are a concern.

Afternoon: Devrent Valley
After the underground visit, leave the afternoon flexible at Devrent’s open-air rock formations. Cut this stop if your departure time leaves little room for the return journey.
Option C: Gülşehir → St. Jean Church → Açıksaray
Visit St. Jean Church
St. Jean Church is a two-storey rock-cut church at the entrance to Gülşehir. Its upper church has biblical wall paintings, giving this route a focus distinct from Paşabağ and Zelve.
Continue to Açıksaray
Açıksaray lies around 3 km from Gülşehir and contains rock-cut spaces, churches and Roman-period tombs.
Look for the mushroom-shaped rock formations around the site. Leave time to walk between the carved spaces instead of treating Açıksaray as a single photo stop.
Can you do this 2-day Avanos itinerary without a car?
Day 1 is straightforward without a car because most of the itinerary stays inside Avanos.
A rental car or a pre-arranged driver lets you connect the Day 2 stops on your own schedule. Confirm pickup, return location and luggage arrangements before booking.
