2 days in Avanos gives you enough time to experience the town itself and still use it as a base for another side of Cappadocia. The key is not trying to squeeze every nearby attraction into 48 hours.
Day 1 works best when it stays almost entirely in Avanos: the Kızılırmak riverfront, pottery, the historic quarter and an evening in town. On Day 2, choose one compact route depending on what you want from Cappadocia — classic rock landscapes, an underground city, or a quieter historical route.
That structure keeps you from zigzagging across the region and turns Avanos into a practical base rather than just another stop between Göreme attractions.

Do you need one night or two nights in Avanos?
Two days in Avanos can work with either one night or two nights.
One night is enough if you arrive early on Day 1 and leave late on Day 2. You can still spend almost a full first day in Avanos and use the following day for one of the nearby routes below.
Two nights make the itinerary much easier. You do not need to arrive early, move your luggage after sightseeing on Day 2 or time your return around another hotel check-in.

Day 1: Spend the day in Avanos
The first day should stay local.
If you book accommodation in Avanos and immediately spend both days driving around the rest of Cappadocia, there is little reason to stay here in the first place.
Day 1 is where Avanos earns the overnight stop.
Morning: start at the Kızılırmak River
Begin around the Kızılırmak riverfront and modern centre.
The river is the easiest orientation point in Avanos, and you can walk between the waterfront, bridges, shops and central streets without turning the morning into a rigid sightseeing schedule.
Give yourself time to cross the river, walk along the banks and get a feel for the town before moving into its pottery and historic side later in the day.

Late morning or early afternoon: try a pottery workshop
Pottery is one of the clearest reasons to give Avanos more than a quick walk along the river.
A workshop works better than simply browsing ceramics because it turns the town’s best-known craft into something you actually participate in.
You do not need to dedicate half a day to it. A shorter hands-on session still fits easily between the riverfront and Old Town, while longer workshops are available if ceramics are one of the main reasons for your visit.

Optional: add Güray Museum
If pottery and ceramics are a genuine interest rather than simply something you want to try once, add Güray Museum.
The museum focuses on ceramics and pottery in an underground exhibition space and makes the most sense as an extension of the pottery side of Avanos.
Keep it optional. If you would rather spend more time walking, eating or exploring the historic quarter, skip the museum. A two-day itinerary should still leave room to enjoy the town rather than turn every free hour into another attraction.
Late afternoon: walk through Avanos Old Town
Save Old Town for later in the day.
The historic streets climb above modern Avanos through stone houses, old mansions, wooden balconies and narrow residential lanes.
This part of town changes the logic of an overnight stay.
A day visitor can walk through Old Town and leave. An overnight visitor can choose accommodation here, return after dinner and start the next morning without another journey into Avanos.

Why staying overnight changes this itinerary
The main advantage of staying in Avanos is not that another attraction suddenly appears after sunset.
It is continuity.
You finish Day 1 without worrying about the last dolmuş back to Göreme. You can have dinner, walk near the river, return to your hotel and begin Day 2 from Avanos instead of repeating the same journey the next morning.
That makes these two days feel like one continuous route rather than two separate day trips.
And if you choose a historic property in Old Town, the accommodation itself becomes part of the experience rather than simply somewhere to sleep.
Day 2: Choose one route
A quick note on timing: museum and archaeological-site opening hours in Turkey can change seasonally, and the exact summer and winter schedules vary by site. Always check the current official listing before your visit, especially if you are travelling in late autumn or winter.
Do not try to combine all three options.
The most useful way to plan Day 2 is to decide what kind of Cappadocia experience you still want.

Option A: Çavuşin → Paşabağ → Zelve
Best for: a first Cappadocia trip
This is the most straightforward Day 2.
It gives you a village and rock settlement, some of Cappadocia’s most distinctive fairy chimneys and a much larger open-air archaeological site without sending you across the entire region.
Start in Çavuşin
Spend time around the village and old rock-cut settlement before continuing farther north.
One current detail is important: Çavuşin Church itself is closed for restoration. Do not plan the stop around entering the church; build it around the village and accessible rock settlement instead.
Continue to Paşabağ
Paşabağ is where you get the concentrated multi-headed fairy chimneys associated with the former “Valley of the Priests.”
Do not allocate the same amount of time to Paşabağ and Zelve.
Paşabağ works as a relatively concentrated visit. Zelve needs more time and more walking.
There is also a useful practical advantage to pairing the two: Paşabağ and Zelve are part of the same Zelve–Paşabağlar Archaeological Site and are covered by one combined admission ticket. You do not need to buy separate entrance tickets for each site.
Give Zelve enough time
Zelve is close enough to Paşabağ that the two sites combine naturally, but the experience is very different.
The archaeological site spreads across three valleys, so this is not another quick roadside stop.
Allow around two hours if you want to explore it properly. Expect uneven ground, slopes and much more walking than at Paşabağ. Comfortable shoes are important, especially if you plan to explore beyond the easiest paths.
Choose Option A if: this is your first Cappadocia trip, you want some of the region’s most recognizable landscapes and you prefer a route with several different stops rather than a museum-heavy day.
Option B: Özkonak Underground City → Devrent Valley
Best for: underground Cappadocia without a long drive south
Özkonak is the geographical winner for this itinerary.
It lies around 14 km from Avanos, so you can add an underground city without spending a large part of Day 2 driving toward Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu farther south.
Morning: Özkonak Underground City
Özkonak contains interconnected underground galleries and tunnels cut into the volcanic rock.
Give the underground city the cooler first part of the day, then return toward the open landscapes.
This is an efficient way to add an underground-city experience while keeping the route centred around Avanos rather than crossing a large part of Cappadocia.
Afternoon: Devrent Valley
Pairing an underground city with Devrent gives Day 2 a strong contrast.
The morning is enclosed, carved and archaeological. The afternoon is open landscape and unusual volcanic formations.
Devrent is better approached as a place to wander and look at the formations rather than another attraction where you need to complete a fixed route.
Choose Option B if: you want an underground city, you prefer a compact route from Avanos and you like the idea of combining underground architecture with an open valley landscape.
Option C: Gülşehir → St. Jean Church → Açıksaray
Best for: repeat visitors and quieter historical routes
This is the least obvious of the three options.
That is exactly why it works well if you have already covered Göreme, Paşabağ, Zelve and the major underground cities.
Start in Gülşehir
Use Gülşehir as the base for a more historical Day 2.
The route has less of the classic “fairy chimney checklist” feel and more emphasis on rock-cut religious sites and former settlements.
Visit St. Jean Church
St. Jean Church adds a rock-cut religious site without sending you back into the busier Göreme circuit.
The church is currently open to visitors, but check the latest opening schedule before travelling because museum hours can change seasonally.
Continue to Açıksaray
Açıksaray lies around 3 km from Gülşehir and contains rock-cut spaces, churches and Roman-period tombs.
The area also has distinctive mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys, giving the route a landscape element as well as an archaeological one.
Choose Option C if: this is not your first Cappadocia trip, you have already seen the headline landscapes and you want Day 2 to feel quieter and more archaeological.
Can you do this 2-day Avanos itinerary without a car?
Day 1 is straightforward without a car because most of the itinerary stays inside Avanos.
Day 2 depends much more on the route.
A car makes all three options easier because you can connect villages, archaeological sites and valleys without planning around local departures or waiting for connections.
Without a car, simplify the day rather than trying to copy a driving itinerary stop for stop. Taxis, local transport and organized tours can fill some gaps, but the shortest route on a map is not always the quickest route by public transport.

For this itinerary, narrow the accommodation search to two areas.
Avanos Old Town works best if you want the stay itself to feel part of the trip: historic stone buildings, quieter streets and small guesthouses with more character.
Central Avanos and the Kızılırmak river area make more sense if transport, restaurants, easier luggage movement and a quick Day 2 departure matter more.

“Avanos” on an accommodation website does not always mean Avanos town. Avanos is also the name of a wider administrative district, so a hotel listed under Avanos may actually be in another settlement. Always open the map before booking, especially if you do not have a car.

Day 2 moves outward in one direction.
