10 Best Things to Do in Ürgüp: Old Town, Wine & Views

The best things to do in Ürgüp are not concentrated around one famous monument. The town is strongest as a complete experience: old stone neighbourhoods, Temenni Hill, historic cave architecture, Cappadocian wine, a working 18th-century hamam, a local Saturday market and the Three Beauties viewpoint just outside town.

Ürgüp feels very different from Göreme.

Göreme puts valleys, tour offices and traveller infrastructure front and centre. Ürgüp feels more like a real town that happens to sit inside Cappadocia.

That makes it particularly good if you enjoy:

old streets and architecture;
wine and food;
panoramic viewpoints;
quieter evenings;
historic hotels;
exploring somewhere without moving from attraction to attraction every 30 minutes.

You do not need an entire sightseeing day for central Ürgüp.

For most first-time visitors, 3–5 hours is enough for the town itself. Stay longer if you want a hamam, wine tasting, a slow meal or sunset at the Three Beauties.

1. Walk Through Old Ürgüp

The best way to understand Ürgüp is not to search for one street labelled Old Town.

Historic Ürgüp is spread through several neighbourhoods.

The strongest areas for traditional architecture include Temenni, Yunak, Esbelli, Dere and Kayakapı.

This is where you find the combination that makes Ürgüp visually different from many other Cappadocia towns:

traditional cut-stone houses;
cave spaces incorporated into buildings;
narrow lanes;
old mansions;
carved doorways;
hillside neighbourhoods;
Ottoman and Seljuk-era architectural layers.

Some buildings are almost half cave, half stone house.

Others look much more urban than the rock-cut landscapes around Göreme.

That is part of Ürgüp’s appeal.

You are not walking through an archaeological site where every building has an information board.

You are walking through a living town built into layers of older Cappadocia.

A Simple Old Ürgüp Walking Route

For a first visit, I would start around the centre and gradually move uphill rather than trying to tick off neighbourhoods separately.

A practical structure is:

town centre → Temenni area → Temenni Hill → Yunak / Esbelli streets → Kayakapı

You can then loop back toward the centre for wine, the hamam or dinner.

Do not rush this part.

The smaller streets are the attraction.

If you spend the entire visit walking only along the main commercial road, Ürgüp can feel far less interesting than it actually is.

2. Climb Temenni Hill for the Best Central View

Temenni Tepesi is the easiest major viewpoint to add to a visit to central Ürgüp.

The rock hill rises roughly 80 metres above the town and gives you a 360-degree panorama.

From the top you can see across Ürgüp and, in clear conditions, toward Mount Erciyes.

One of the more unusual details is the approach to the viewing area.

Part of the route passes through a rock-cut tunnel approximately 80–100 metres long before reaching the viewing balcony.

Mahzen Şarap Evi

For a smaller alternative in the centre, Mahzen Şarap Evi sits beside the historic hamam.

The business describes itself as growing from a family making wine for themselves and later offering it to visitors to Ürgüp.

That makes it an interesting second option if you prefer a smaller wine-house atmosphere.

Again, check the current tasting format and price directly.

Which Wine Stop Should You Choose?

If wine is only a minor interest, choose one.

You do not need to turn Ürgüp into a wine-bar crawl just because Cappadocia produces wine.

If wine is genuinely part of your travel interests, then Ürgüp becomes much stronger as an overnight stop because you can taste without worrying about immediately driving to another town.

5. Use the Historic Ürgüp Hamam

This is one of the most distinctive activities in town because it is not another valley, viewpoint or cave.

The Tarihi Ürgüp Hamamı was built in 1726–1727 and remains in use.

The building follows a traditional bath layout with changing, cool and hot sections, domes, washing basins and a central heated stone.

That makes it both a historic building and a functioning experience.

Current packages start at approximately €60, with longer packages around €100. Typical treatments run roughly 50–70 minutes, and reservations are recommended.

Asmalı Konak is a historic mansion in the Temenni area with a history of roughly 180 years and 42 rooms.

For Turkish visitors, however, its fame is strongly tied to television.

The mansion became widely known as a filming location for the Turkish series Asmalı Konak.

That creates two very different kinds of visitor.

If you know the series, this can be a genuinely nostalgic stop.

If you do not, I would treat it primarily as an architectural curiosity rather than one of Cappadocia’s essential attractions.

I would put it below Temenni, the old neighbourhoods and wine for most international first-time visitors.

8. Notice the Smaller Historic Stops Around Town

Not every historic site in Ürgüp needs its own hour.

Some are better encountered naturally while walking.

One example is Altıkapılı Türbe, a 13th-century Seljuk-period tomb in the town centre.

Its name refers to its unusual open, six-sided design.

You will also encounter older mosques and religious buildings throughout the historic neighbourhoods, including around the Temenni, Esbelli and Dere areas.

I would not build a separate checklist around them.

Instead, treat them as part of the architectural walk.

That keeps the visit focused on Ürgüp as a town rather than turning every historic structure into another waypoint you feel obligated to collect.

9. Look for the BKM Underground House on Temenni Hill

This is one of the more unusual finds in Ürgüp’s current municipal visitor guide.

The BKM underground house is not another Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu.

It originated as a cave home used by a local family and was later opened to visitors after the dwelling was vacated in the 1980s.

The spaces include old rooms and tunnels associated with domestic life.

That is what makes it interesting.

Instead of another huge defensive underground settlement, this is a much smaller glimpse into living inside Ürgüp’s rock architecture.

However, current public hours and visitor arrangements are not consistently published online.

So I would treat this as a genuine check-locally hidden gem, not a guaranteed attraction.

If you are already around Temenni, ask whether it is open.

I would not cross Cappadocia specifically for it.

10. See the Three Beauties Just Outside Ürgüp

The Three Beauties, or Üç Güzeller, are among Cappadocia’s best-known fairy-chimney formations.

They sit only a short distance outside Ürgüp.

This makes them very easy to combine with the town rather than creating a separate sightseeing day.

The main viewpoint includes a walking area with views of the three formations and, in clear conditions, Mount Erciyes behind them.

The museum normally contains archaeological and ethnographic material covering periods from prehistory through the Ottoman era.

If you are travelling around early September, check the current dates of the International Ürgüp Grape Harvest Festival.

Can You Visit Ürgüp Without a Car?

Yes.

The main town experience is concentrated enough to explore on foot once you are in central Ürgüp.

The main issue is hills.

Historic Ürgüp spreads over sloping terrain, so expect repeated uphill and downhill walking.

Kayakapi Premium Caves – Cappadocia is the strongest fit if you want to stay inside a restored historic hillside setting.

Choose it for:

cave and stone architecture;
a quieter luxury experience;
large accommodation spaces;
historic surroundings;
a hotel that functions as part of the destination.

It is particularly appropriate if Kayakapı itself is one of the reasons Ürgüp appeals to you.

Yunak Evleri: Best for Classic Central Cave-Hotel Atmosphere

Yunak Evleri sits in the Temenni area and combines historic cave houses with a 19th-century Greek mansion.

This is the option I would consider if you want:

a recognisable Cappadocia cave-hotel experience;
easy access to historic Ürgüp;
central location;
a property that feels connected to the old-town architecture.

It is a more natural fit for somebody who wants to walk out of the hotel and continue exploring central Ürgüp.

Sacred House: Best for Design and Hotel-as-an-Experience

Sacred House is the most distinctive choice of the three.

Its appeal is not simply “nice cave hotel.”

The property leans heavily into theatrical architecture, dark interiors, design, restaurant and spa experiences.

Choose it if:

unusual design matters;
you want a romantic or dramatic property;
hotel atmosphere is part of the trip;
you are looking for something very different from a standard cave room.

I would not choose Sacred House simply because you need a bed in Ürgüp.

The whole point is the experience.

But the town makes a useful starting point for several nearby places.

Mustafapaşa

A historic town south of Ürgüp with Greek architectural heritage and a very different atmosphere from central Cappadocia’s main tourism hubs.

Gomeda and Üzengi Valleys

Good choices if you want a less standard valley experience and are already exploring south of Ürgüp.

Keşlik Monastery

A useful addition to a driving day toward Mustafapaşa and the southern part of the district.

Devrent Valley

Much easier to combine with Ürgüp if you are travelling north toward Avanos and Zelve.
