Pigeon Valley Cappadocia: Uçhisar to Göreme Hiking Guide
Pigeon Valley Cappadocia is one of the most practical hikes in the region because it solves a transport problem. Instead of arranging transport back to Göreme after visiting Uçhisar, you can descend into the valley and walk roughly 4 km through rock-cut dovecotes, narrow paths, and greener canyon sections.
The official information board at the Uçhisar entrance lists the route as 4.095 km, with an average walking duration of 3.5 hours. It describes the trail as narrow and uneven and also warns about falling rocks and the risk of falls.
That makes Pigeon Valley accessible compared with some longer Cappadocia hikes, but it is not simply a flat sightseeing path.
I visited the upper Pigeon Valley viewpoint on the Uçhisar side rather than hiking the entire route. Even without the full walk, it was worth stopping for the valley panorama, carved pigeon houses, famous wish tree and views back toward Uçhisar Castle.

Why Hike Pigeon Valley from Uçhisar to Göreme?
The biggest advantage of Pigeon Valley is that the hike actually takes you somewhere useful.
You can spend part of the day exploring Uçhisar, visit the castle and viewpoint, and then walk back toward Göreme instead of returning by road.
The route also works particularly well in this direction because Uçhisar sits higher than Göreme.
According to the elevation profile displayed at the official trail entrance, the route drops from approximately 1335 metres to 1132 metres.
That does not mean every step is downhill, but the overall direction works in your favour.
For most visitors, Uçhisar to Göreme is the more practical direction.
If you are planning to visit the castle before the hike, see Is Uçhisar Castle Worth Visiting?.
Pigeon Valley Viewpoint in Uçhisar
You do not need to complete the full hike to see Pigeon Valley.
I visited the upper viewpoint on the Uçhisar side, which is an easy stop to combine with the old streets of Uçhisar and the castle.
From here you can look across the valley and immediately notice hundreds of small openings carved into the cliffs.
At first they almost look decorative.
They are actually entrances to rock-cut dovecotes.
The viewpoint is also where you will find one of the area’s famous wish trees, its branches heavily decorated with blue evil-eye amulets (nazar boncuğu) framing the valley behind it.
Uçhisar Castle rises above the surrounding landscape, so this is also a strong photography stop even if you have no intention of hiking to Göreme.
Is the Pigeon Valley Viewpoint Free?
Yes. The viewpoint and valley trail do not require a museum ticket.
You can stop for the panorama and then either return to Uçhisar or continue down into the valley.
Why Is It Called Pigeon Valley?
The name makes considerably more sense once you start looking closely at the cliffs.
For centuries, people in Cappadocia carved dovecotes into the soft volcanic rock.
The small exterior openings led into larger chambers containing nesting spaces for pigeons.
The birds were useful because their droppings could be collected and used as natural fertiliser for vineyards, orchards and fields.
That agricultural function is what made the dovecotes valuable.
At the viewpoint, the entrances are particularly easy to spot because they appear in repeated rows across the rock faces.
From a distance they resemble decorative patterns cut into the cliffs, although each opening once belonged to a working pigeon house.
Where Does the Pigeon Valley Hike Start?
For the easier version of the hike, start on the Uçhisar side.
The official Güvercinlik Valley information board stands near the upper trail area and gives the main route specifications before the descent.
This is also the logical place to combine:
Uçhisar Castle → Pigeon Valley viewpoint → Pigeon Valley hike → Göreme
If you are staying in Göreme, travel to Uçhisar first and then walk back.
You can normally reach Uçhisar from Göreme by local transport or taxi.
The drive itself is short, so there is little practical advantage in hiking uphill from Göreme unless you specifically prefer that direction.
How Long Is the Pigeon Valley Hike?
The official information board at the trail lists:
Route length: 4.095 km
This refers to the designated valley route.
Your phone or GPS watch may record a longer distance once you include:
- walking through Uçhisar;
- visiting the viewpoint;
- Uçhisar Castle;
- short trail detours;
- photo stops;
- the final walk into central Göreme.
So do not be surprised if the complete outing comes out longer than 4.1 km.

How Long Does Pigeon Valley Really Take?
This is one of the details where online estimates can be misleading.
Some hiking guides make Pigeon Valley sound like a very quick walk.
The official board at the Uçhisar entrance gives an average walking duration of 3.5 hours.
That is the safest figure to use when blocking out your itinerary.
Faster walkers may finish considerably sooner, especially without long stops. But building your day around the fastest estimate leaves little room for navigation, photos or slower trail sections.
A reasonable planning range is:
- Fast walkers: potentially around 2 hours.
- Typical sightseeing pace: around 2.5–3.5 hours.
- Lots of photos, slower pace or route-finding: use the full official 3.5-hour estimate.
If you are also visiting Uçhisar Castle and spending time at the viewpoint, allow roughly half a day for the full outing rather than squeezing it between tightly scheduled activities.
Is Pigeon Valley an Easy Hike?
Classify it as easy-to-moderate rather than a simple stroll.
The route is not technically demanding in the way a serious mountain trail would be, but the official information board specifically describes it as:
“Narrow and Uneven Path.”
It also displays warnings for:
- falling rocks;
- fall hazards;
- uneven terrain.
Expect a mixture of:
- dusty paths;
- loose volcanic tuff;
- gravel;
- narrow trail sections;
- steeper descents;
- irregular ground;
- trail junctions.
So this is not a paved walk between Uçhisar and Göreme.
Comfortable closed shoes with decent grip are the sensible choice.

Is Pigeon Valley Suitable for Children?
That depends more on the child than on the headline difficulty rating.
Older children who are comfortable walking on uneven natural trails may do well.
Be more cautious with:
- very young children;
- anyone uncomfortable around uneven edges;
- pushchairs;
- people with mobility limitations.
The official warning signs are a useful reminder that the route should still be treated as a hiking trail.
Uçhisar to Göreme or Göreme to Uçhisar?
Uçhisar → Göreme
For most visitors, this is the more practical direction.
Advantages:
- overall descent;
- easier in warm weather;
- simple to combine with Uçhisar Castle first;
- finish in Göreme, where many travellers are staying;
- no need to arrange transport back after the hike.
Göreme → Uçhisar
The reverse direction is also possible.
Its main advantage is that Uçhisar Castle gradually becomes your destination above the valley.
But you will be working against the overall elevation change.
For a first visit, stick to the descent: start in Uçhisar and walk back to Göreme.
What Do You See on the Pigeon Valley Trail?
The dovecotes are the defining feature, but the route offers more than rows of pigeon houses.
Depending on the exact path and season, expect:
- tall rock walls;
- carved pigeon chambers;
- narrow canyon sections;
- tunnels and rock passages;
- vegetation and orchard areas;
- views back toward Uçhisar;
- Cappadocia’s characteristic volcanic landscape.
The greener sections help distinguish Pigeon Valley from some of Cappadocia’s more exposed hiking areas.
What About the Pigeon Valley Waterfall?
Local tourism information mentions a waterfall inside Pigeon Valley.
Treat it as a seasonal feature rather than something guaranteed.
Cappadocia’s conditions vary considerably through the year, so the waterfall should be considered a possible bonus rather than one of the main reasons to choose this hike.
Do You Need a Map for Pigeon Valley?
Yes. Download an offline map before starting.
Pigeon Valley is frequently described as easy, but that does not mean every trail junction is perfectly obvious.
The valley contains side paths and branching tracks, and some sections can be less intuitive than the simple Uçhisar-to-Göreme description suggests.
An offline hiking map is particularly useful if:
- you are hiking alone;
- this is your first Cappadocia trail;
- you want to avoid accidental detours;
- mobile reception becomes unreliable;
- you are hiking later in the day.
Do not depend entirely on occasional signs.

Can You Get Lost in Pigeon Valley?
It is not a remote wilderness hike, but taking a wrong branch is possible.
Ignore the common online advice claiming the route is so easy that navigation doesn’t matter.
Easy terrain does not automatically mean foolproof navigation.
Download the route before entering the valley and pay attention when the trail splits.
Is There Shade in Pigeon Valley?
There is some shelter from valley walls and vegetation, but do not treat Pigeon Valley as a shaded summer hike.
Cappadocia sun can be intense, especially around midday.
Bring:
- water;
- hat;
- sunscreen;
- comfortable shoes.
The official trail board itself recommends water, comfortable walking shoes, quick-energy food, a hat and backpack.
That is considerably more realistic than turning up in sandals because the route has been labelled “easy”.
Is There Food or Water on the Trail?
Do not rely on it.
Small seasonal stalls or drink stops may sometimes operate around the valley, but they are not infrastructure you should build the hike around.
Stock up on water in Uçhisar before entering the valley.
The same applies to food if you expect to spend several hours on the route.
Use cafés and toilets in Uçhisar or Göreme rather than assuming facilities will be available inside the valley.
Best Time of Day to Hike Pigeon Valley
Early Morning
Morning is the easiest choice in warm weather.
Advantages include:
- cooler temperatures;
- less intense sun;
- plenty of daylight remaining if the hike takes longer than expected.
On some mornings, balloons may also be visible somewhere above the Cappadocia landscape, although balloon routes depend on wind and should never be treated as guaranteed from Pigeon Valley.
Late Afternoon
I visited the Uçhisar viewpoint later in the day, and the softer light worked beautifully across the valley.
The lower sun brings out more texture in the rock formations, while Uçhisar Castle becomes a strong landmark above the landscape.
Late afternoon is excellent for the viewpoint.
For the full hike, however, make sure you still have enough daylight to reach Göreme comfortably.
Because of the uneven ground and trail junctions, do not plan to finish Pigeon Valley after dark.
Best Time of Year for Pigeon Valley
Spring and autumn are the easiest hiking seasons.
April–May
Good temperatures, greener scenery and generally comfortable walking conditions.
Rain can make sections muddier or more slippery.
June
Still a good hiking month, but start earlier as temperatures rise.
July–August
Possible, but avoid the hottest part of the day.
Morning is the much better option.
September–October
One of the strongest periods for Cappadocia hiking, with more comfortable temperatures and good walking conditions.
Winter
The valley can still be beautiful, but snow, ice or mud can make an otherwise moderate route considerably more awkward.
For a broader seasonal comparison, see Best Time to Visit Cappadocia: Weather, Balloons & Crowds by Month.
Can You Visit Pigeon Valley Without Hiking?
Absolutely.
The Uçhisar viewpoint is worthwhile on its own.
This works particularly well if:
- you have limited time;
- you do not want a 4 km walk;
- someone in your group has mobility concerns;
- you are already visiting Uçhisar Castle;
- you mainly want photographs of the valley and dovecotes.
You can spend a short time at the viewpoint, see the pigeon houses and wish tree, and continue exploring Uçhisar.
The full hike and the viewpoint are really two different experiences.
Does the Cappadocia Green Tour Hike Pigeon Valley?
Usually, no—and this causes frequent confusion.
While many Green Tour itineraries advertise “Pigeon Valley,” this usually means a brief panoramic viewpoint stop rather than walking the full 4 km Uçhisar-to-Göreme trail.
Some current itineraries allow only around 15 minutes at the viewpoint.
Check the actual itinerary rather than assuming “Pigeon Valley” means hiking the valley.
If you want to walk the full trail, do it independently or choose a dedicated hiking tour.
Pigeon Valley or Rose Valley?
If you have enough time, hike both because they offer different experiences.
But if you must choose:
Choose Pigeon Valley if:
- you want an easier route;
- you are already visiting Uçhisar;
- you want a practical walk back to Göreme;
- you are particularly interested in dovecotes;
- you prefer a shorter point-to-point hike.
Choose Rose Valley if:
- dramatic rock formations are your priority;
- you want a longer hiking experience;
- churches and more complex valley scenery interest you;
- you are comfortable with a slightly more demanding route.
For pure dramatic scenery, Rose Valley is stronger.
For combining sightseeing with useful point-to-point transport, Pigeon Valley is more practical.
See my Rose Valley Cappadocia hiking guide for the comparison.
A Simple Uçhisar and Pigeon Valley Half-Day Route
A practical itinerary is:
1. Travel from Göreme to Uçhisar
Take local transport or a taxi.
2. Explore Uçhisar
Walk through the old streets and climb Uçhisar Castle if you want the panoramic view from the top.
3. Stop at Pigeon Valley Viewpoint
See the valley from above, look for the rock-cut dovecotes and photograph the wish tree.
4. Start the Pigeon Valley Trail
Follow the descent from the Uçhisar side toward Göreme.
5. Walk Through the Valley
Allow enough time for narrow sections, navigation and photos.
6. Finish in Göreme
Continue directly back to your accommodation or stop for food in town.
This creates a much better flow than travelling to Uçhisar, sightseeing and then returning along the same road.

What to Bring
For the full trail, take:
- at least one bottle of water;
- comfortable closed shoes;
- hat;
- sunscreen;
- small snack;
- offline map;
- charged phone;
- light layer outside summer.
The official information board also lists a backpack and quick-energy food among its recommended equipment.
Is Pigeon Valley Worth Hiking?
Yes — particularly if you are already visiting Uçhisar and staying in Göreme.
Pigeon Valley is not necessarily the most dramatic hike in Cappadocia, and that is part of its appeal.
It offers a relatively accessible point-to-point route with a clear practical purpose: visit Uçhisar, then walk back through the landscape instead of taking the road.
The dovecotes also give the valley more historical context than you might expect from the viewpoint.
I initially stopped for the scenery, but the hundreds of small openings carved into the cliffs became the most interesting part of the visit once I understood why they were there.

Visit Uçhisar first, see the castle and upper viewpoint, then use the valley trail as your route back toward Göreme.
The official trail information gives a distance of 4.095 km and an average walking time of 3.5 hours, with narrow and uneven sections along the way.
Do not underestimate it simply because the route is frequently labelled easy. Bring water, wear proper shoes and download the route before starting.
And even if you decide against the full hike, the Uçhisar viewpoint is still worth the stop for its broad valley panorama and the remarkable rock-cut pigeon houses that gave Güvercinlik Vadisi its name.
